  • Ive never hear of a watts per lb rule for helis but it's going to be a big number for a 3D capable heli that's for sure, it must work out something like 500/lb.

Anyway, this weekend i had a 'sort of' maiden flight. This was of my Goblin 630 which i've re-built and converted to Black Thunder 700 spec. Probably over half of the heli is new and what's not new has been dismantles and rebuilt, so fair enough to call it a maiden I think. There was nothing wrong with the 630, it was a nice heli but it took different size packs to all my others so never got flown much due to lack of batteries.

Here's the Black Thunder (minus the black bits!):

    • OXY 4 Max

      Hey Guys,

Some people were asking me to post about the Max after flying it.

Well i did 2 flights today and i am stunned. Tuned it 2420rpm and can perform 3D in a graceful way.
This is the lowest rpm i could achieve for 3D flight.
XNova 890Kv motor with 18T pinion.

I used to have a Henseleit TDR in the past and it reminded me of it!
This is the lightest 380 heli to date.

Hopefully i can get a vid soon.

      Cheers!

      • No I haven't. Both of my flying fields are now gone... developers have built on one and the other has now become a building site.
Yes the big sigpic is coming back

          • Bitterly cold here and intermittent showers but i was determined to give my new Jeti DS24 a try out so i got a couple of flights in before the feeling left my fingers. This Tx is awesome!

What do you like about the TX?

                Everything

                In no particular order:
                • jaw dropping quality look and feel i.e. the milled from solid aluminium case and real carbon fibre front fascia etc.
                • Quality construction on the inside too, unlike any Tx I've seen before.
                • Metal gimbals fully ball raced with hall effect sensors have fantastic feel, unlike 'pots' they can never wear or go out of calibration
                • Display screen (colour) top mounted is much easier to glance at in flight
                • Very simple and intuitive programming but also very powerful with advanced features like logic switches etc which dont appear on most mainstream Tx's. Far more powerful and customise-able than the Spektrum that i'm used to.
                • Seamless and easy to use integration with the Spirit allows full FBL setup from the Tx (a lot slicker than the Spektrum implementation)
                • Telemetry integration with Spirit and Hobbywing ESC that allows battery mAh consumed, voltage, vibration, current alarms (among others)
                • 'Stick Shaker' (aka haptic feedback) vibration alerts
                • Fully customise-able voice alerts (you can absolutely create any voice message you want and assign to any function)
                • Gyro sensors in the Tx so you can control functions by Tx movement (not tried this but the feature is there!)
                • Tx will respond to voice so you could for instance have rescue activated by voice commend (not yet tried it)

it's even got a built in FM radio if you want to listen to music while you fly!

                • I don't see the price in the list of things you like. Crikey! Where's the eye-watering emoji?

Just for fun, here's your list compared to my budget FrSky Taranis that costs less than a tenth of a DS24:

                  • jaw dropping quality look and feel i.e. the milled from solid aluminium case and real carbon fibre front fascia etc. - Yep, you got that one. All the paint is wearing on my Taranis and the switch nuts are corroded where my fingers rest.

                  • Quality construction on the inside too, unlike any Tx I've seen before. - I opened a Jeti DS14 once, to remove the ratchet on the throttle stick. I don't remember what it was like inside, so it can't have been that special

                  • Metal gimbals fully ball raced with hall effect sensors have fantastic feel, unlike 'pots' they can never wear or go out of calibration - My Taranis has hall effect gimbals. They were £20 each and just plug in where the stock ones do. Best gimbals I've ever used, easily.
                  • Display screen (colour) top mounted is much easier to glance at in flight - Nice. Is it any good in sunlight (I doubt you know given the weather), as even my phone's OLED screen sucks in the sun. The position is good though. Top mounted screens are hard to do because they're noisy on RF. That's why most radios have them at the bottom, obscured by your neck strap if you use one.

                  • Very simple and intuitive programming but also very powerful with advanced features like logic switches etc which dont appear on most mainstream Tx's. Far more powerful and customise-able than the Spektrum that i'm used to. - I bet my Taranis can do everything the Jeti can, with the exception of the gyro stuff. I didn't find Jeti much easier to program than a Taranis, but I have much more experience on that than the week I had a Jeti DS14

                  • Seamless and easy to use integration with the Spirit allows full FBL setup from the Tx (a lot slicker than the Spektrum implementation) - Get that with Spirit and Taranis, I think. I don't know how slick it is though, as I don't fly Spirit. I did fancy trying Spirit with the GPS for a laugh and the hard deck.

                  • Telemetry integration with Spirit and Hobbywing ESC that allows battery mAh consumed, voltage, vibration, current alarms (among others) - and that. I've had mAH consumed telemetry since 2014. First on the Taranis, and now on Vbar control

                  • 'Stick Shaker' (aka haptic feedback) vibration alerts - You can have vibration on the Taranis Plus, but mine pre-dates that model.

                  • Fully customise-able voice alerts (you can absolutely create any voice message you want and assign to any function) - Yep, Taranis has that.
                  • Gyro sensors in the Tx so you can control functions by Tx movement (not tried this but the feature is there!) - You won this one.

                  • Tx will respond to voice so you could for instance have rescue activated by voice commend (not yet tried it) - Now that's the one thing in this list that is truly awesome, assuming it works. Having rescue activate on a girly scream would be awesome.

This isn't a serious post. Just a bit of fun. Enjoy your new purchase.

i bought a Taranis a while back. For the price the hardware is excellent but I couldn’t get to grips with the open Tx software so sold it pretty quickly.
End of the day the Jeti isn’t for everyone either but I’m happy with it. In the time it took me on the Jeti to setup 3 helis complete with voice alerts, telemetry and FBL integration all I’d managed to do with the Taranis was to pull my hair out and put my blood pressure through the roof. Probably just me being thick but it was a frustrating experience.

                      • OpenTX is not for every one. That's certainly true. My mate recently got one, and even with me giving him step by step instructions and explaining what everything does and why it needs to be done, he still doesn't get it.

                        • What frustrates me most with Open Tx was that I’m normally pretty good with that sort of thing. The guys at the field often come to me with their setup problems. Like I said, on the Jeti coming at it with zero Jeti experience I had a pretty comprehensive setup built from scratch and working on three helis in a day (and I was at work most of that day). No need for YouTube videos and only a few glances at the manual (yes you actually get a manual)
My experience with Open Tx couldn’t have been more different, it just seemed half baked to me , but some people love it so each to their own.

                            • I’ve not looked into LUA at all, I’m still very much in the stage of learning what the basic firmware will do. No doubt in time I’ll give LUA a try.
