very lucky escape was the first crash in a row following two others going in before me, but all minimal damage. was this the last of the summer?

      • We got talking about windsocks? Do we actually need one?
I find ours very useful. We had one which had torn itself to shreds. I bought a new one which is only a couple of feet long but it is shaped and it behaves just like a full size item. When it is horizontal the wind is at 15 knots.

        • Trying to make the most of the sunshine now so I was out there both days this weekend. Although, annoyingly I appear to have 'peaked' in my flying about a couple weeks ago. I had one day a while back where everything just fell into place, every move I was working on came off like I intended. It was a high point that I thought I would then sustain, but since then I slipped and went backwards and lost the confidence I had for some reason. But so it goes.

Thanks to Michalis (acidla) for the YEP ESC on the Beam and to Graham (The Tok'ra) for the yellow Trex 500 canopy!

          • Well, I went to the field, as promised.

Buddy boxing was interesting. Yesterdays session was cancelled because he tried to bodge his tail boom block (the tab that stops the boom rotating was gone) and it couldn't even stand up to a spool up without twisting.

Today I was checking it over (this is a Trex 500L btw), and noticed he had a cyclic servo on the tail, an he also had 1x Align 3G blade, and 1x old fly bar Align blade (the almost completely white ones, with a strip of carbon) on there. I told him, so don't even bother! Anyway, I spooled it up and put it in a hover. I told him it sounded rough and asked if he still wanted to continue. He said yes, so I got it pretty high, and went to flip it forward as slowly as I could into an inverted hover.

Anyway, as soon as it got past knife edge, the whole rotor disc started wobbling like crazy and it went in, instantly piercing the lipo. Anyway, I got the canopy off and the lipo out with no drama, and just a bit of melted plastic where the battery sits. The guys in the pits said it popped a link. I don't really know what happened, but it was uncontrollable.

Back to my flights. I took the Logo 600 and Goblin Black Thunder today, two packs for each. Again, the 700 flew better than the Logo. I really gelled with the Goblin today for the first time. It's now running Rotortech 710s instead of RJX 690s, and even at 1960rpm (where I do almost all my flying) it's just a beast. It wants to be flown fast and hard. I try my best to accommodate it.
Current fleet: Goblin Thunder Sport (700), Trex 700L, Logo 600, Specter 700, Henseleit TDR, V-Baaa control.
Next heli: I have pretty much everything I want. Maybe I'll upgrade some electronics or something.

            • I think once I saw the missmatch of blades I'd have refused to fly it until it's been stripped and rebuilt correctly. Sounds like it was built by a previous forum member lol.

He's unbelievable. He owns around 60 helis, and almost as many planes. He has at least 5x Trex 500s. But when he crashes them (which is often) he'll skimp and use old parts wherever possible, whether he should or not.

He did bring a spare heli - a brand new never crashed Trex 500L, but he had DSM2 satellites on it and his DX9 black won't bind with DSM2, and that had to be the master transmitter because his DX18 (he also has a lot of transmitters!) is first gen and doesn't do wireless buddy box, but does do DSM2.

                  • Weekends don't get much better for me. Lots of flying, a bit of crashing, endless talking rubbish with mates and crashing their fixed-wings and quads, and then home for an adult beverage and F1. Pure magic.

I think since we don't have little flags on the end of our aerials any more, we need them more than ever. #SaveTheWindsock

60 helis but still can’t do his own maiden flights or be trusted without a buddy box

He does do his own maiden flights. The only reason I was flying it was to flip it over before handing the controls to him. We did some buddy boxing last year, which went fine, on the second attempt. He was ecstatic. The first attempt the tail let go for some unknown reason. Probably another botched repair. The problem is he hasn't kept practicing and spent most of the year flying planes.

In the last half hour he sent me a text, telling me it wasn't the blades, but an "elongated hole where the jesus bolt passes, caused by a previous crash, which meant the head moved and it popped a link". I do worry some times. You could tell by the sound in a hover it was the blades. It sounded like a plane with an out of balance or damaged prop.

He'll tell you himself he's an idiot outside of work. At work though? He's a doctor. A consultant no less.

                        • I flew yesterday, first flight of the day with a heli and lost orientation, kinda got it back for a bit but by that point the heli was too far away to fully regain it, then push cyclic left when in hindsight should have pushed right, hit throttle hold and it went in. lol

I flew my multi-rotor to take some video footage of the flying site to upload onto the clubs web site

                              • Sunday morning spent eating lots of sky up with my Protos 800. Then the fun bit with my newly built plank. I'll definitely get some stick for this. A little Multiplex Easystreet 2. It weighs 1.3kg with battery and I put an Axi 2820-12 motor in at 650 watts with a 11X10 folding prop. No undercarriage so you hand launch and slide it in on grass. First flight so it was totally untrimmed and boy did I nearly have a heart attack. The thing is absolutely ballistic. I now know about Watts per pound. Average for a trainer is 80 watts per pound. My little Easystreet comes in at about 226 watts per pound. Trying to trim it and keep track of it was a nightmare. Anyway it all turned out good and it actually landed perfectly with not even a grass stain on the bottom, and it's trimmed. I had the shakes after that one.

Is there a rule of thumb for watts vs pounds on hell's? I'm guessing probably not coz the more power the better and it's more controllable on a heli. I think my little plank is the equivalent to 500 heli size so you have to keep it fairly close in to keep orientation and that's difficult with something moving at mach 2....lol.
