Ah no... feel gutted for you!
Mine went in yesterday after a cyclic servo locked up. Luckily (from a quick glance) it seems to be only main and tail blades gone.

I am just deciding what tail blades to go for, if i should stick with align or go with some 92mm radix. I think I might go for the shorter route just as a precaution.

I have been very suprised how few problems there have been as its a first batch heli, so although this is a big worry for me I hope it's an issue they can solve easily enough.

Cheers Grant, I'm sure it will get sorted out pronto

Will speak to Climb Out tomorrow about it, think there will be a couple of us

Should also mention that Climb Out have been very helpful in resolving my auto hub issues

Just annoying that it is one of those failures that is difficult to pin point as whatever goes takes a few other pieces with it

Phil who has had 2 failures is going to try his in the morning now that it is rebuilt with different tail blades to see if all ok, then maybe put some NHP's on. Will be interesting to know the outcome.

Maybe, watch out Grant, every N5 I've laid my eye's on has failed other than yours

Somebody needs to let Matt know in the US, he might be able to shine some light on the problem.

Really sorry to hear of these problems I'm running 95mm Radix tails, tail hold is bang on, but as i said in the other thread, I've locktited the shaft to the tailbox flange bearings as the shaft seems to be undersized by 0.05mm causing a tiny amount of play. Definately worth doing IMO, a tiny smear of red is all that is required.

                      Hi Guys

I've talked with the designer Matt and he is not seeing this issue in the USA with tails...
As of yet this seems to be limited to the UK market and we are interested to see and understand what is happening to the tail and why.

Nick please call me in the morning so i can get the parts back to see what has caused this issue and get to the bottom of it and resolve it for you.

Please be assured we will get to the bottom of it

P.S Ive been running 95 tails on the pre production machine and mine with no problems so is Jamie and a few other i know of locally with no issues.

the boom has been forcibly pulled in and twisted, At this point I haven't a clue as to cause, could be any number of things
Weak plastic yokes are very unlikely as they are the N9 ones and the Weak yoke pins, with the amount of force going though when it failed, it pulled the pin out, this would also be the reason the tail twists and gets pulled in.. the drive would still have the turning force but the tail would be locked, so it only has one way to drive and thats towards the front pulley wheel.

Just out of interest what head speeds are you running?

On the beam E4 we was bending main shafts, due to over speeding the heads, you only needed a slight in-balance, bang it just goes.

In this case a loose flange bearing in the G10, a under sided shaft or over sized bearing can cause a vibe, i would image the rocking could cause the imbalance.

If its down to the types of blades, it more likely the cross section and the extra disc loading.

I haven't flown NHP tail blades in a while now, been using Radix for last couple of years - however from memory I think that NHP blades are parallel chordwise, whilst Radix have a slight taper.

Possibly the combination of the extra length (92mm upto 95mm) and the wider chord - could this have overloaded the tail if there was a slight vibe already.

Exchanged emails with Matt Botos last night and he passed on a couple of points that N5 owners may want to check

                                - The bolt that holds the tail idler pulley on the tail box should be sufficiently loose for you to be able to turn it by hand. Mine wasn't although the tail pulley was freely rotating

                                - There should be no up and down play/movement on the main tail pulley on the main shaft. Tail pulley is split to allow the jesus bolt to be cranked as tightly as possible. Mine was tight but allowed some 1mm movement. Even now once as tight as I can get it there is still slight movement. Maybe a tolerance issue? If the pulley is not tight, Matt believes the rocking can lead to harmonics situation where by it gets to the point that the tail belt can actually get nipped and lock the tail, leading to failure

Matt should probably add these points to his website

I feel that the above points are all valid but I still find it hard to ignore that all 4 failures have occurred running a specific tail blade type. Further investigation needs to be undertaken around this.

Guess I will shortly be throwing some money Curtis Youngblood's way and will be sticking with 92mm
