  • Need help identifying what's wrong with my 700e

Need help from any expert on here!
    Summary:
My heli seems to cut out (power to the motor so could be esc) when I apply power to it.

It first happened a couple of weeks back when I flew. Started off hovering, then went to IdleUp 1 (2050 headspeed) and did a powered forward flight away from me as I wanted to check if my wagging sound is still there (which it was but that's another story). I then turned to come back to me and halfway to getting close to me, I could hear the motor slowing down and this is when I decided to Throttle Hold when I could feel the heli kept coming down even when I pushed my Throttle stick upwards.

So I checked my logs but I only had 2 things switched on my logging and they didn't look abnormal so I switched everything on and I also calibrated my Low and High throttle points on the ESC.

Anyway, last night, I proceeded to fly. Fresh lipos. I was on Normal mode (1900 headspeed), did a couple of pirouettes to check my tail gain.. then I decided to do a pitch pump. That's when the motor cut out again and I was forced to Auto (I held off flicking Throttle Hold as I wanted to see if my motor still had power but no power so I flicked Throttle Hold around 2 feet off ground)

I have not looked at my logs yet. Will do that tonight. My Vbar was all ok. Sats are all fine and not lost connection. It's gotta be something in my ESC?
Does anyone have a guess just by looking at this video from last night?

Some people on here have suggested it could be the One Way Bearing which I will check as well. For the time being, here is full log from the flight. Tell me which tab you need to see in closeup and I'll post. Thanks again for the help!

Is there a possibility that when you pitch pump the BEC spikes and hits the low voltage threshold causing the ESC to shutdown?
might be worth checking the settings on the low volts and cut off mode?

        My guess is you may have a faulty ESC. Is your ESC a caslte 120 HV? Things to check are;
Lipo cut off voltage I would set to 3.20
Check your gov gain (if you have it setup is 15 or less) I ran 25 on my 600e and it stripped TT gears for fun as well as tail twitches ect.
I would also run it with the gov disabled just to rule it out. (end point mode)

I would also tap the controller when its on and a helper has hold of the main bladesto check you dont have a loose joint inside of the controller. A sharp tap with your finger knuckle shouldn't make it reboot. A flying buddy had the same issue you have and it was a bad joint inside the controller. It was a phoenix 100 HV.

Hope you get it sorted as these issues are a pain to track down and usually prove to be something straightforward!

          Hey.

Download the log file and post it for us to take a look buddy, that will answer if there is any problem from the ESC or radio connection.

Be carful if you try the above, if there is a fault inside the ESC and it's connected to the flight LiPo you risk serious burns if it goes up. One went up recently after a crash rebuild on a 700E.
If it's going to go it usually goes on first spool up. The culprit is the connector that connects the various PCB boards within the ESC, the ICE100 had a batch 2 years ago that were not bonded together properly. In flight vibration let this connector loosen and the resultant arcing causes the ESC to fail badly.

Just watched the video, it's not your one-way auto bearing slipping is it?
It might just be me but the motor didn't seem to cut quickly until you might have hit throttle hold.
          .

Thanks all. I WILL post the log file as soon as I get home this afternoon.

Quick check on my heli has revealed no loose solder joints on any of my wires. I shall check my settings again as well.
I do remember updating the firmware on it to the latest one (I didn't mean to - it just did it straight away when I accidentally clicked on Update and I was hoping it will say: Are You Sure?)..

in the castle software check the peak cutoff setting and change it to "insensitive"

Also how have you got it setup? Pitch curves/esc governor/vbar governor?

Not using Vbar gov. I'm using Castle's gov mode (30% 70% and 100% throttle flat line settings)

Here's the screenshot. File is dated Aug 31, 2013 so this has got to be the updated file I have before my flight last night.

Hmm - I've noticed on this file that my Current Limiting is not set to Insensitive. I used to have it set to that before... would this be the reason?

Was the motor definitely inactive after landing?

If the one-way was failing you should still have motor control after the auto and before reseting the ESC.

If no motor control then it looks like an ESC related problem as you obviously still had a good radio link.

                    Muscleflex...

in the cutoff's tab, where it says "current limiting" 60amps is way too low mate, soon as you pitch pump you'll get a current spike which will cut the esc off. you need to change this to "insensitive".

                    Give that a try first.

If it still doesn't work then in the governor tab, change it to "governor low" or "governor high" - a guy at our club was having weird problems using the "set rpm" setting (possible software bug) but this was on a 160a HV esc so may be different.

Certainly change that current limiter though!

Current limiting is set to 60a and this heli is a 120hv on 12s. Set it to disabled or insensetive and it will fly fine. Same thing happen to a flying buddy with a 700e, he set it to 80 I think and it cuts off mid air. Good thing that we have practiced auto and he landed it safely. Another thing is your motor timing set it to 5.

I didn't try the motor again after that last night. I unplugged the battery and that was it (I didn't want to pollute the Castle Log hence I switched off). Bu the first video, when it first happened, I hovered again after the landing and it hovered fine (I Only hovered at about 2-3feet and only for 10-20sec)

Thanks. i shall check that off the heli tonight as soon as I get home. I've always had it set to Insensitive so don't know why it changed and how I missed it off. Maybe when I updated the firmware, it changed it or something..

Cool. Thanks. I will definitely check and I'll definitely post the logs tonight. I hope it's just this that's causing it. I don't want to keep crossing my fingers if I have to auto again as I've not really practiced it for real and I've just been lucky both times. And I can't afford to be fixing this heli everytime! Too expensive for parts

Whenever the firmware updates itself then all the settings go to defaults.. so you need go through the whole lot and check everything..

As said the motor settings could also be better but I figured leave that until you get it flying right 1st. solve one problem at a time kinda thing.

Others will know for sure (I've never owned a CC ICE ESC) but if it had tripped the current limit I would not expect the motor to work again until the ESC was reset?

If that is the case then loss of rotor speed might well point to a one-way bearing issue as Ian pointed out earlier.

not 100% sure but I think with the current limiter, if you bring throttle to zero (TH) it clears it and bringing throttle back up will make the esc spool up again but very slowly (standard spool up)
