get a garage to do a sniff test on the collant, see if theres any exhaust gasses getting in there. It sounds remarkably similar to the symptoms my old golf diesel showed - that was a blown headgasket from the combustion chamber to the water jacket :(

Will have to book it in at the garage when they open then :(

Just took it out for a drive, when it got up to temp I check all the pipes.

The water in the header tank was stone cold, both pipes on the header tank were also stone cold. The only hot pipe I could see find was on the nearside going onto the rad.

The belt coming off the camshaft (closest to me) seems to be spinning, but does sound like a water pump problem?
Ok going totally from memory here ( so don't slate me !!!!) but isn't the waterpump driven off the rear of one of the camshafts ???? by a flat belt ???? I haven't got a TDCi here to check .
If so is that belt ok in otherwords is the pump turning ?????????
just a thought ...............
yes it a multi rib belt from the front cam
if the pump slips or doesn't turn (ie pump dive failed) the engine will over heat boiling the water up and bringing the ecu light on and it will cut the engine out

i would back flush the heater and try it
if not you'll be looking at the head gasket

It has overheated once (when first had the issue) but no ECU light has come one.

hOw do I go about back-flushing the heater?

remove the hoses to the heater and flush out in one direction and then the other with a hose pipe

i've never overheated a mondeo but the transit with the same engine puts the ecu light on

Paul i just remembered i have a ford work shop manuals on disc.

And found this it may help, also it's no harm to have your interior heater on full to hot while bleeding your system as air will be trapped in there also.

Hope it helps

Tried to make pic bigger with no joy, turns out there's a bleed valve on your water pump
