  • Mondeo Car Trouble

    MK3 2.0 51 plate 2.0TDCI

Was driving home last night and noticed there was no hot air coming from the interior fans, but put it down to the -2 temps outside freezing a pipe.

..but just made it into work today after the car started loosing power and started to overheat.

I let it cool down for a couple of minutes, then drove it for a couple of minutes (untill the temp needle started to move again), and repeated this all the way to work :svengo:

I have been told to check the thermostat first, then radiator and waterpump.

    Anyone seen this before?

    :cheers2:

The advice is right as it's most likely one of those causing the problem go for the thermostat first it's the cheapest :)

Not sure if this would have any connection..

But my friends corsa would overheat if he didnt have the interior air fans running.

Also worth checking that you have anti freeze in the coolant Paul.

Had a very similar problem with the wife's Astra. Turns out there was a hole in one of the coolant pipes and she had lost most of the coolant. Strangely there was enough to keep the engine cool but not enough to heat the interior.
Changed the hose then re-filled with coolant and all was good.
Make sure that if you have lost coolant that you add anti-freeze to the new mixture you add!

Personally, and the cheapest option, lol, check all the pipework, to make sure none of it is frozen, restricting the flow of coolant to the engine. Is there a sufficient level of antifreeze in the car??? Is it strong enough to cope with the temperatures?? It was -12 yesterday morning where i am. Luckily or not, i have a volvo, so it loves this weather. LOL :)

I have no idea but someone here had a similar problem and it was the turbo, dont know if anything else was wrong with it.

                Paul,

I had a similar problem with my 2.0 zetec about this time last year. No hot air from fans, engine running warm, engine fan was coming on and off regularly.

Turned out the engine coolant tank had frozen due to lack of antifreeze and then somehow blew all the water out of the pressure valve on the cap of the tank.

Check the water level in the coolant tank and make sure its got plenty of antifreeze in. If its full check that there are no puddles under the car after its sat still for a few hours. If there's plenty of coolant in the tank but its still happening then like others have said there may me a hole/dodgy connection in one of coolant pipes. Definitely sounds like an engine coolant issue, quite common this time of year.

If this isn't the problem then its worth checking the engine thermostat as it could be faulty or damaged from driving in the snow, this could be causing the engine to have problems regulating the temperature correctly.

Cheers for all the advice, will have to pop out at lunch to take a look.

                  Yup, its a turbo.

UPDATE: Just checked the coolant level and it has definitely dropped since last night when I checked it.

Best top it up and look for some leaks I suppose.

Similar happened to me last year and turned out to be lack of anti freeze so the engine popped a core plug as the coolant turned to ice and expanded...not funny at all :(

My current van has just done similar but this year plenty of anti freeze but this time the head gasket decided to let go and dump all the coolant in the sump :(

This really does sound like its

                      A low on coolant or

B frozen up , squidge the hoses if they feel crunchy thats what it will be as for turbo failing I don't think so.

sorry for short reply mad at work lots of frozen up cars .

any probs pm me i will try and help

Hmm.. Well just put 1.5l of coolant in it?!

Not too sure where it has all gone tbh as it was on MAX 3 weeks ago.

Will have to see how it holds up, hopefully a cheap fix.

                          .....but doubt it :D

On mine there is a small pressure valve on the cap of the coolant tank (looks like a little hole in centre of cap) the coolant has probably frozen over night and blown all the coolant out of the pressure valve when you've come to start it in the morning, that's what happened to mine. Plenty of antifreeze is the answer ;)

them tdci mondeo's are shite, just wait until you start having problems with the clutch, dual mass fly wheel and turbo actuator thingy. my dads got 1 and had nothing but trouble with his.
                              cheers
