  • If you could only have 1...

So, if you could only have one heli, what would it be?

I'm getting more interested in focusing on Heli flying (rather than fixed wing) and therefore want to get a decent hack.

I've got a nice Trex 450 SE v2 which has been my hack for a while but it is a rather limited in the weather conditions that it's any good in. I've got a couple of indoor and an old 45size Moskito but nothing that I want to fly in typical (wind) conditions.

So I need something that's fantastic to fly in a broad variety of conditions, but that doesn't break the bank in running costs. I have a prefrence for Electric as it's easier to throw in the motor to grab a quick lunch time flight when passing the field, but I'm not set on that. I'm only flying at a basic level but appreciate a decent heli. No fixed budget, but it's not money no object as if I don't keep the price down I won't afford it this year. Also need to thing about spares availability. Likely to be my main machine for 3-4 years so would feel better to avoid the "flash in the pan" for me.

Current thinking is Trex 550e 3G. Ballance of price, performance and looks for me. But what do I know. There is clearly a lot more knowledge and experience here than I can muster, so interested to see what you think.

So what would you have if you could only fly one heli this year and it was coming out of your pocket? Would you have similar criteria to me or am I coming from it from the wrong direction.

Trex 550 is a good choice

Personally I wouldn't buy the 3G combo though, i'd use either a BeastX or V-Bar flybarless system.

..out of my fleet I'd be torn between the 600N and the 500...so a 550 sounds like a good compromise I'd support.

Reason is simply crash cost/parts access and simplicity/stability and airtime costs.

If I had to keep only one on my current fleet it would have to be my 700n beastx - nothing puts a smile on my face like that does.

I would personally go for a 700n which has excellent value and available everywhere. But you may aswell also go for the 600n if your still learning. Reason for choosing nitro is coz I prefer nitro on the big helis and electrics on small helis.
            Long live the flybar.

                    Thanks folks.

Mixed bag there. What's the issue with 3G? The reviews I've read in the mags were quitepositive I thought.

I had thought of everything up to the 700. I suspect that's an itch I'll have to scratch some day. But I'm guessing it might be a bit much for a hack?

I did think the 600 would be the sencible nitro choice. Just not as convienient as leccy.

Couple of guys at the field swear by their 500's but I'm a little concerned that they're still a bit small to handle the wider wind range .

It would be a very difficult choice and I'd be torn between my 550E FBL and my 700LE FBL, although the 550E has the advantage that there are more suitable flying sites for it than a big honking 90 size nitro!
