  • Do you really need to start off with a 600+ size heli?

Just popped over to my local flying club, met a few blokes who flew helis.
Seem a nice bunch, but when I said I had a Blade 400 they said I would find it too difficult to fly due to it being "Too Small".
Now I understand that due to where the club is based (close to the coast) that wind will always be an issue.

    But my question is
    a) Is it really a no go for anything under a 600 size heli.
    b) Is this going to be the right club for me as im just starting out.

As normal all opinions greatly received (Unless I don't like them)

Hi , if I could start again , yes I'd go straight to the 600 . Why ? 450 to twitchy and doesn't like wind , t Rex 500 OK but its no where near as stable as my 600.

Saying all that fly what you can afford to crash , how do you feel with your 400 ?

      Just remember its your hobby
      T Rex 600 n pro, Raptor 50 ( on the build table) T Rex 500 , Nano and a Blade 450 ,T Rex 250 ( still in box )
      Aroura 9 , FF9 with specky mod , dx6i
      Oh and loads of Planks.

Same as Vinny, started with a 450 and worked up. A 450 is no fun in the wind admittedly but cheap to fix and you will crash lol

There's nothing stopping you flying a 600 from the off and hovering will be much easier but personally I found taming a 450 more of a challenge and then really enjoyed the bigger Helis once I'd learnt the basics

450 size all the way imo. Sure if your flush & can afford to crash a 600 then go for it but a 450 makes more sense. Not just for crash costs but also versitality as you can hover it in your garden or park (cue the safety police jumping on that comment). Cheaper lipo's assuming leccy is what your wanting. If I had to start today i'd still start from a small 450 or FP. Yea they can say 600 but it's not going to be them crashing it.

              i started with a 4#3b lol

most clubs i think members will recommend something big just like quite a few prefer to fly nitro and don't recommend electric.

start with a mcpx, and move up

learn how to hover and fly one of these about and a larger heli will be a breeze once u get over the fear factor.

They will be telling you that because they are much more stable. So, they arn't lying to you but it's not wise to pick a size heli you can't afford to crash, and you almost certainly will do alot of crashing while starting out.

If you can afford £100-200 on repairs every couple of weeks then yeah get a 600, otherwise i'd stick with the 450 and swallow the £30 repair costs with ease.

Once you can fly a 450 size, you will be able to fly anything with ease

Bigger is more stable and expensive but easier if you can afford the crashes. Start small and cheap, if you can fly a 'skittish' 450, you'll fly anything!

I have only just started in this hobby.
Started with a 4ch FP in December, then Blade Nano CPX in February and a Blade 400 in March.
My experience so far is :-
I can fly the 4ch FP no problem, The Nano I can hover fine and do circuits and fig 8's (although room is a bit too small), The 400 I have only flown once and hovered tail in ok then hit the training legs on the kerb and it flipped (the road I live in is a dead end and i'm at the end so flying there is no prob)
I have used Phoenix a lot and am getting there.

I have an issue with a) the cost of a 600 (initially buying it then "WHEN" I crash) and b) the size scares the hell out of me and don't even talk about nitro

Sounds like you already know what you want to do

You will adjust to the size pretty quickly, i remember when i got the 550 a couple of months ago it seems huge, now it looks and feels small as i have the 700 aswell.

Nearly flew the 550 into myself earlier due to the strong winds, it suddenly started looking alot bigger when it was coming at me with blades of death than it does when it's on the ground

Wouldnt of liked to of seen the damaged it could do to me though, thats for sure!

I learnt with a Trex 600 nitro, put a hoola hoop on the skids before you start to learn to hover it, I fly on the coast at Lowestoft and it is always windy and a 450 is a handful, a 400 even more so

I started with a 450 and it was totally the right choice for me, everyone is different though but looking back I wouldn't have changed a thing. Good luck whatever you're flying!
