Do you really need to start off with a 600+ size heli?

    Thank's for all the replies.

If funds and confidence wern't an issue then a 600 would be fine.
That being said the Blade 400 looks big at the moment and I still have a lot to learn with it.
I understand about the wind making things harder but just getting a bigger heli isn't an option at the moment.
So my final choice is do I
    a) join the club but pick my days when I can fly my 400
    b) look for another club where there advice is not to "buy a bigger heli" (Im at Preesall, half way between Blackpool and Lancaster)
    c) don't join a club and just practice when and where I can

I started with a Blade 400 mate & although its not the newest Heli its still a great little starter model . Theres also loads of knowledge on here if you need any help , still got mine allthough it does'nt get flown much now i keep it for sentimental reasons , or should that be (mental) lol . Just enjoy it & sod what anyone else thinks , we all start with what we want after all its your hobby .

Not sure that would really be a bad thing? you will get to enjoy zero wind while you learn and it will teach you to fly in limited airspace + depth perception.

Just get some big fans in now and again to learn how to counter wind

I started on a Eco Piccolo flying indoors and out, not the faster way to learn. Mini Ttan or Trex 450 would be a good start unless you have deep pockets.

As many have said, this is a hobby - it's supposed to be fun. You won't have fun if you're flying something that is ..

... So big that it scares the bejeezus out of you.
... So expensive to fly and crash, that you're scared to do anything more than hover and/or admire it on a shelf.

Personally, I started with a 120SR, 450-3D and later the mcpx and 130X. Worth remembering that the modern flybarless helis deal with the wind quite well. Certainly miles better than the smaller helis of a few years ago with a flybar.

Go at your own pace. Trust your instincts, and don't be pushed into something you feel isn't right for you.

Your right I need to go at my own pace and not be pushed too far beyond my comfort zone.

I do feel I need to find a place where I can be helped along and pushed to a degree, be that a club or on a one to one.
I do know if I try to learn on my own I will give up in the short term or worse cut corners and I have learn't from this forum that is somewhere I do not want to go.

I had (have) an issue with the 450 because of it's size, so I have been playing with micro helis (MCPX BL mainly) and recently a 130x

Having only just about conquered the "fear factor" last week with my 450, the 130x was instrumental in helping my confidence to build up.

The larger ones are no doubt more stable, however a heli is a heli and what is right for you is right for you.

Do you really need to start off with a 600+ size heli?

My advice would be to get yourself a brushless mcpx and a simulator, you can get the basics down on the sim and then move on to nail it on the mcpx BL then progress onto the 400 when you're comfortable. If the wind is a problem, upgrade to flybar less like a 450X and you'll find it will be a lot more stable in the wind but still relatively cheap while you're learning.

As for the 'too small' comments lets face it, you don't learn to drive in a bus do you?

As for advice, you will get heaps of help and advice here, this forum is full of very knowledgeable people.

                                Is knowledgeable even a word??
