starting to get sick of phoenix

just as the title says. im getting totally fed up with not being able to connect to sessions or be able to connect and it be really laggy or program crash after a couple of minutes.

im starting to feel like ive been robbed and im thinking of selling or throwing up the wall and i wont be recommending it again to any1 thats for sure.

it says full internet multiplayer - is this a joke or what

professional model flight simulation - i dont think so

this has been going on far to long and the guys at phoenix better do something soon.

its not just multiplayer either. changing settings/models and scenes can cause the programme to shut down in single player mode aswell.

where is this long awaited update we have all been waiting for?

as I said right at the begining when they started the mutlipler update.

having a central server is a single point of failure. I reaccon that if you where able to connect directly to each other. things would work much faster and less likley to drop sessions ect..

When you guys host a session, do you get a "welcome to Phoenix online" message?

Since the version change I have never been able to host. I did loads of research and came to the conclusion that my router was causing the issue. Yesterday I assigned my external ip address to my main computer through my router and bingo - " welcome to phoenix online" I hosted a session for the first time.

Sadly now my router refuses to give me the straight through (DMZ) connection I used to prove the point but that is not Phoenix's fault it's my hardware.

So can one of you network guys explain why my Phoenix won't work while I am behind my router?

When you create a multiplayer session on Phoenix, this is hosted by you on your computer. It is also registered with the PhoenixNet master server which we run 24/7 so that other Phoenix users can search online and find and join your session.

So can one of you network guys explain why my Phoenix won't work while I am behind my router?

I'm not a network admin, but I know a little bit about routing.

Phoenix uses a protocol called UDP, where each packet of data is sent in isolation. So when a packet goes out it has the address of the Phoenix host and your router sends it on to the right place, but when the host sends it's response back the packet only has the address that your router has, so it's not obvious which machine on your local network it should be sent to. You can usually specify where to send these packets in your router setup; from the packet sniffing I did, I think you need to forward UDP packets in the range 9000-9005 to your Phoenix machine.

Edit: TCP (used by web, etc) doesn't suffer from this problem as the protocol sets up a virtual 'connection' between the two machines that the router keeps track of to know where to send the packets on the local network.

but after about 30 seconds i get a problem message in red about problems with the phoenix server and my session will not be displayed which could be because of my router or firewall

Tried Phoenix and must admit not tooimpressed with single sim.. couldn get onto web based sim on line.

Although no net version with Reflex the sim is intuitive, plenty of support.. though much is in German!!!! and the scenery and models are well depicted and fly realistically.

Its a top sim and would recommend it.

Multiplayer was always sketchy so the new version doesn't seem any worse than it was before.

My complaint is the physics. Since Ade has stopped being involved the physics have suffered. The current version has a really wierd collective response.

When I joined in with the session yesterday (or was it Saturday) I did find there was a bit of a lag.

However, I hosted a session for a while yesterday and all seemed OK from my side. Did any of the fliers that joined me suffer with lag?

i'll keep this nice and simple, this isn't what people want to hear but it's time to call a spade a spade (again)

phoenix is NOT fixable folks, accept it. the programming is the problem here and it's been obvious to me for a long long time if they "fix" one thing they get problems elsewhere.

if you want to practice flying then go for it offline, if you want to go online i suggest ditching the idea and sparking the xbox 360 up.

well i wanted the online sessions for learning because i go on voice chat on msn ( 1 to 1 ) or skype (multi-chat/can have upto 24 people in 1 call) so an experienced 3d pilot can teach me new moves while i watch him/her and they talk me through the stick movements while at the same time giving me a demo. then its my turn to have ago and they can talk me through it while im trying a move and they can also watch my stick movements at the same time.

as i said b4 single player isnt perfect as you only have to change a setting and the sim crashes to desk top.
