on friday myself,,rubbersox, and chem were all online togther it was running prety well.
i have found
when you go to set up a server if something is not right.
You still get Welcome to phoenix online message in the center of the screen.
now open your chat box (in phoenix)
now when you connect you should get the welcome message in the center of the screen, but, you also get the same message in green, in the chat box.
When something is wrong i have found you dont get the green message in the chat box.
I have found this is a good way to tell if your server is up and running.
I agree its not good game play.
but with 4 friends all liveing localy we can connect and fly without much issue or lag.
On friday Rubbersox setup the server and i am sure chem will agree that the server runs ok.
The only thing is,, he has a 10meg line and a high spec pc,, i know this has nothing to do with connection issues.
I know sox has router issues, he removes his useual router and uses another one when running the sim.
I am probably going to get digged at for this but i still dont think its a phoenix issue.
If this was the case how come we can connect and fly togther and it runs ok?.

TBH, I think it IS a Phoenix issue to a point - their implementation of on-line seems very picky as to which routers it will work with. I've seen in another thread on here that BT home routers are a particular problem. I don't know the answer, just thought i put my 2p's worth in.
as ivor says its all down to who connects...
the past few nights i've had some and been in some great sessions.
where its run smooth for hours.
I don't run through a router..
just a straight connection from cable modem to pc.
a big part of the problem is that phoenix don't include any documentation on how the network should be set up and people are trying many different ways to get it working... and conflicting settings on each persons machine is causing problems
if people had some idea of best settings it could only be better.
online aside I still recon Phoenix is the best of the sims out there (when it comes down to the nitty gritty of actually learning to fly and not playing dogfights with your mates and saying its crap because online doesn't work a lot of the time..... at the end of the day thats not why we bought a sim in the 1st place)
although the online side of it is a lot of fun and is good for a natter I don't take it too seriously.
where i really get the benefit is when i use it offline , stick some music on and learn new stuff
your sessions seem to be almost the only ones I can actually get online with - what are you doing different ???
Not sure I'm doing anything different.
I do have:
- 20mb cable broadband
- a Netgear WPN824 router (which I am wired into, not wireless)
Would that make a difference?
For those not using cable, are you perhaps suffering from contention ratio issues? After all, many sessions seem to take place at the peak internet usage times over the weekend.

Most of the Aligns, fair few Spektrum bits, bunch of Align & HiTec servos, OBE, VD & Bar.
the problem is consistancy for most. i can get online probably 75% of the time with no issues but other times it won't boot into the room or it's very laggy.
the problem is the program and way it is written/implemented.
you could have a room with all 20mb virgin lines (i know, tried it) and it will lag. the next night the same users might not even be able to connect or if they do they get lag. (i know, again tried it)
it's very hit/miss and for most it's more miss than hit. i don't know enough about how these things are written but it doesn't take a genious to work out a computer game should not be jerky online. i dread going into a room with learners as they always crash and i'm usually mid piro (aka sods law) and the momentary lags throws the timing out...GRRRRR.

oh i know its the program.
you only have to look at playing a 360 game online... which are way more complex that phoenix and they all work flawlesly whilst playing your mates.
as you say phoenix is very hit and miss.
I just don't see the point in getting hung up on it any more... if i try and connect and get problems i just forget it and have a practice offline.
Im fed up moaning about phoenix now i'm just going to use it for the reason i bought it.
