  • Align 450 Hughes 500 5 blade

    Hello to all.

I'm a newbie to this forum and pretty new to electric Helis. I have been building a 450 sized align with an align hughes 500 body shell. I fitted a 5 blade rotor head and installed a 6S motor and ESC.

During test hovering I was having trouble getting the gyro (Align 3GX) to hold the tail. I read up some forums and was advised to increase the headspeed to get more power through the torque tube to the tail.

With more power the heli lifts of and all seems well for about 30 seconds then it piros round in 45degree jumps every 5-10 seconds until i get it back on the ground.

Any ideas how to get adequate tail control or where I might have gone wrong?

    Thanks for any help

    Cheers

    use a 4 blade tail
and use a stand alone gyro on the tail

he's recommending using a standalone gyro for the tail to work alongside the 3gx

is the 3GX able to handle multi bladed heads?

450 with a belt tail? If so could be static hits?

Those multi blade heads aren't cheap, so why not splash out on a good fbl system. Mini V on pro would be my choice. It has a special micro heli setting and you can run in rate mode which gives a more scale appearance when flying.

i thought the mini V is not supposed to be placed in a multi bladed heli? i'm sure i read that somewhere?

anyhow - also, if you're new to helis... scale helis might not be a good idea for you - if you crash, it will be quite expensive and might put you off flying rc helis straight away!?!
maybe try and fly it pod and boom first and when you're confident, put the scale body on?

Really? I'd not heard that, but I have a deal that the day I turn up with a scale someone can give me a good slap, so not suprising I hadn't heard. Don't see why it wouldn't work though.

I have a pod and boom 450 for flying. This was more for the challenge of building it and setting it up with a view to perhaps selling it on when I'm finished. It seemed to fly OK as a pod and boom with 5 blades and only acted funny with the scale body on.

Its a torque tube BTW so no belt static.

With a 5 blade head you have significantly increased the torque that the tail has to counter.

You also have to run the head slower than a 2 blade head so the tail has less authority than normal.

Normal fix would be to fit a multi-blade tail, or possibly larger tail blades.

One way or another you need more force from the tail to counter the head torque.

I have fitted the 450MX Brushless Motor(1700KV) RCM-BL450MX HML45M02 and am running it using 6S so there is plenty of power. On initial flights the heli was taking off at such low speed there was no tail authority and it would just piro. When i increased the throttle curve to get the motor up to about 80% - 85% at 5deg pitch it takes off fine and will hold steady for 20 seconds and then this anti-clockwise piro in about 45deg jumps starts to kick in. I have tried with the stock 2 blade tail and a 3 blade tail although ideally i would like to go with 2 blade as it suits the scale look.

Thanks for all your input so far guys.
                          Cheers

Maybe you can post a video so we can see what's happening with the heli when it starts spinning?

It's in bits just now while I diagnose problem and swap over flybarless controller. Once flying again I will take a short clip. I've also fitted larger tail blades to see if that helps with tail authority.
