Another update.

The Squall has been scrapped as it's just too mangled to ever fly right again.

But I've attached pics of it's replacement which will hopefully be maidened this weekend. :)

Thanks Mark.
I'll be test flying it from a grass field so the landing could be interesting!
Although I will be fitting bigger wheels to try and make it a little easier.

i would take the wheels off and just hand launch it.

i know its not an EDF foamie but if your after something fast then check out the e2k wasp pylon racer;
wasp e2k

its a very very very basic build, is recommended to use a 4s set up and is ballistic !

Kit is only £40 :-)

My local model shops has these in and boy does it look good although the graupner one is the same but costs like 100 notes more.

Phils models at sleaford has these at a good price :cheers2:

Madderdog, my original plan was to hand launch it as you suggest but the servo arms would catch on landing and it would require a bungee/catapult launch.

That wasp e2k looks like serious fun for very little money, I'm quite tempted by that!

I was thinking about repairing the squall with those spares but might just gut it for the radio gear and use it in a e2k.

Alright Danny,

I was just wondering what your progress with the planks is like.Did you maiden the Hawk? and have you decided to repair the squall?

Cheers Grant.:cheers2:

Thanks for reminding me to put an update up Grant!

The Hawk was maidened and it flew for about 5 seconds before stalling and crashing.
After hand launch it didn't gain altitude and was at stalling point until it dropped a wing and did a cartwheel.
The damage wasn't too bad, ripped out the wing mounting points.

I think the problem was that it's designed for a runway take off, but all my local flying sites are bumpy grassy fields.

It's going to be flown again but this time I'm going to travel to a site that has a proper runway.

With regards to the E2K it's being built now and the Squall has been scrapped for electronics.
I might get another one depending on how I get on with the E2K.

I'd love to have an EDF jet but the problems would be transporting it and also the lack of a smooth enough runway.

Some time ago I bought one of these as a super durable cheapy plank;Avicraft Ltd: Aircraft For Beginners - JP PRANGSTER 3D VERSION 4CH 52ins(132cm)

I'd like to convert it to electric and ideally run it on two 2200mah 3 cell packs. I have started looking around for an inexpensive motor / esc setup but haven't found what looks like the ideal choice just yet.

The Squall (EDF) doesn't need a runway and in fact lands better on grass imo.
So you could always get one of those, but I'd suggest starting with the traininer you've already bought as it'll be much easier to fly and you should be able to fly it at Epsom Downs.

Have you had a look on the HobbyKing site as they have a very extensive range of motors?

Yeah I have just started to browse around a bit and the prices, especially on ESCs, varies dramatically. So my goal is to do it cheaply but not have something that's going to burn up on the first flight. It needs to be a pretty low KV motor if I want to run it on 6 cells, either that or something that will run on 11.1 volts and I could maybe run two packs in parallel.

This is the ESC I got from them:
HobbyKing Online R/C Hobby Store : TURNIGY K-Force 100A Brushless ESC

It generally has quite good reviews as a plank ESC.

Let us know which motor and ESC you go for and how you get along. :cheers2:

Btw, I have the programming box for that range of ESCs which your welcome to borrow.
