  • Will a Kipor KGE 980TC Suitcase generator be ok with Server PSU/PL8?

I was talking to my mate today about generators for field charging my lipos when he chirps up... "I think i've got one of those in the garage"

Sure enough he emerges with this bright red, dirty oily knackered piece of junk, we tried start it but no luck... but he said if i can get it running again then I'm more than welcome to borrow it for long days at the field.

I used to have petrol lawnmowers and used to be into nitro so I feel I have a chance of getting it running...

It's not a overly powerful one, infact I think its only 230v/650 watts output BUT It'd do the job for now (and its free to use +petrol)

It does have a lable on saying its a "digital generator" So i would presume it would be ok

but from a quick google on the Kipor website, it says its a "Converter Generator" Not a "Inverter" one - can anyone explain what this means?

Also I will be using a PSU from a server which would then feed the PL8, so Genny>Server PSU>PL8

    Will this be ok?

Anyone with any experience with these gennys say how quickly I could expect to charge 2 x 6S 5000mah LiPos (the PSU is 24v)?

    Cheers

That is crap lol - I was hoping 2 6S lipos in 30 mins lol...

650w is the constant supply not the max (always tend to ignore that figure)

My Main concern is just if the converter generator would produce smooth enough power to be safe with the PSU/PL8 - if its OK to use then I can just plug in and test it out once i've got it running.

Ive just done a quick bit of maths Not sure im right on this Matt but by my reckoning you need 300 watts to charge 1 6s at 5amps so 600watts will do to charge 2 in parralel

use an anti surge multi plug for insurance, Ive taken a few out with those industrial gennys that just rev their nuts off once they run out of fuel, gear stays safe ! my 650w genny the one ive just upgraded from only handled 1 Hyperion charger running both sides at 180w each side at 2c 6s 5000 TP,s and was on the verge of falling over itself

                thanks guys...

The surge protector sounds a good idea, will try get my hands on one as an extra precaution.. don't want all my equipment going up in smoke lol..
lol thats exactly the visions i have.. the genny revving its balls off and taking out my pl8/psu.

Kev, Once again thats very kind of you to offer, Thank you! I will have a crack at it myself see if i can get it running, if not i may have to run it by you. I've got a feeling the problem is with the spark side of it as it seems to turn over ok.. we will see anyway.

Thanks again, will let you know how i get on :-)

With my 1000 watt honda i can charge two 6s 5000's at 8 amps (judt over 1.5 C) to give you an idea of what yours will do

Cheers Kev, its really good of you to offer so much support to people on this forum/hobby... top man.

I am hoping to have everything sorted very soon so perhaps if we have a good day in may (whenever the decent weather finally gets here) sometime we could go up dunkirk farm for the day... i'll bring a box of goodies keep us going too.

....nothing by the sounds of it LOL.
                        where are all these watts going anyway? I don't get why a 1000w genny can't charge two 6S lipos at 10amps? 25v x 10amp x 2 = 500w?

Allow 20% extra for losses etc with the psu and charger.

Probably a bit much but on the safe side.

                              Thanks for the input,

Just been reading on Kipor, the output is 230v @2.8amps = 644watts (rough numbers I suppose)

But anyway the point is, 2.8amps does not sound like much at all! Granted its at 230v but 2.8amps? The fans in the PSU use that much lol.
