Re: Will a Kipor KGE 980TC Suitcase generator be ok with Server PSU/PL8?

My setup pulls 30watts (average) per 1amp charge on 6s.

I charge with ease 6s at 25amps with my kipor 1000 (really its 1kva. = 800watts). Never tried to pull more than that.

Oh and a decent apfc power supply can help a lot.

        A Little update:

Some fresh oil/petrol/spark plug got the Genny working again (WooHoo)

However whenever I try to draw any real power from it, it just trips out (BooHoo)

Maybe its got other problems which is perhaps why it was left to rot in the garage...

BUT anyway I got a bit excited by the prospect of field charging and went and bought a Kipor 1000w sinewave inverter genny.

Richard Mills: Thanks for the tip regarding APFC power supplies, I knew nothing about it but I've done some googling and the PSU I'm using is a HP DPS-600PB which according to google is a APFC unit?

It seems if your gonna use a Genny then its really worth having an apfc psu since they draw upto 40% less current from the AC side.

SO I'm hoping with a 1000W genny and the apfc PSUs and the PL8 I will actually be able to get a decent charge station up and running.

Oh and even though the genny is a newer sinewave one, I have still ordered one of those masterplug surge protectors just as an added safety net (It also has USB outputs too so i could charge the Husban X4 off it even though its a little overkill for that LOL)

That's the psu I use too and yes it has apfc.

When the charger says it's pulling Xamps from the psu that's pretty much the same as the psu is pulling from the genny.

APFC is automatic power factor correction for those of us that don't understand abbreviations.

I'd think any of the modern type server psu's would have this anyway.

At worst a switch mode psu will only about 0.9 out anyway. If its more then that its borderline legal these days.

You reckon so? How do I work it out then as the charger is working off ~24v

              Lets say the charger is saying 5amps on a 6S lipo... so 25v x 5amp = 125w

for the amperage on the AC side, taking an assumption the PSU is 100% efficient (which it won't be) - would I work it out like so, 125w/230v = 0.54amp on the genny?

How efficient do you reckon these DPS600PB PSus are?

                I'd estimate about 85-90%

The PFC helps to stop the actual power and phantom power differences (not to be confused with efficiency but very simerler to it) by countering the lead lag of the current and voltage phases by adding inductance or capacitance as required by the circuit to bring them back into sync with each other. By doing this it reduces the amount of power the unit uses.

heres me thinking electricity is just electricity... most of what you just said has gone straight over my head...

but thanks for the numbers - I will work on a 15% loss through the PSU then, I will be able to work out a ball-park figure now.

I reckon it'll work well for what I want..

Will post a video in time..
