The 600 is a competition ship and it's VERY expensive to run. The 450 is a laugh and although it flies great it just doesn't do some moves well as it's quite twitchy and has little momentum. The 500 sits right in the middle size wise between the two BUT it's not exensive to run and it flys very similarly to the 600, without any of the typical 450 size draw backs. Plus it has the power & momentum to fly some of the more complicated moves. I only did a few flight on mine before it got bent and I can tell you it's killing me having it on the shelf as it is the perfect practice machine.

I already have the 450 v2 se & bar my knight its the one I fly the most.
My 600 has seen less than 20 flights in 3 months I just dont need it in my fleet & it will be sold to make way for something else. That may well be a 500 or a knight 3d depending on what else I manage to sell 30 or 50 raptor being prime candidates.

That will annoy some who have already got their servo's or have them winging their way across the worldPhil

Ditch the mini servo mount on the tail and fit yourself a Trex 600e tail servo mount and a big servo, I chose a JR 8900, the mini servos on the tail give a rather disconnected feel and removes the crispness from the tail. The 8900 brought back the feel of the 600 tail that I was used to and slapped it right on the 500 - instant happy Trev

Suitable pack sizes
ASH /Trev looking at all the stats I'm going for the 2500-3000 tops Range It 100% offers the best performance for outright 3D/flightime.
Regardless of what you guys have said, it's a small model and using an extra heavy pack weight (i.e.4200's) is a performance killer IMO.
RC performance comes from the potential power to weight of the complete system your def wrong to compromise..I'm coming to the conclusion you two are a pair of airheads when it comes to pack choice..LOL
If it needs weight to give it momentium to fly right either your setups are lacking or the style of flying needs to modified.
The 500 offers the highest power to weight of any Align helicopter to date by a very wide margin no need to create a lead sled leave that to the FAI guys. This thing was designed to be light/Quick/Dynamic..
I'm sorry for the rant but quite a few folk have already sprung for the 42's after following your blog and may well be disapointed if they are looking to get the best 3D performance from this machine.
I'm sorry but Its best said as it's a little pointless dragging folk around with poor information on pack sizes.
OK Rant over ..well nearly..bet your glad...I don't mean it in a negative way, but please be more aware of your posts and there likely outcome. It's only fair for everyone.
Not to beat about the bush to much..something you mentioned earlier was the possibility of new Revo 2700 cells. Has Mike given you a time frame for the availibility of cells at this size? These are definetely in the right ballpark and tick all the right boxes ... performce/duration/weight wise.
Again sorry cheers Brian

if you read my posts properly you'll see I said the 4200 is too heavy IMO, the blog doesn't recommend it, just shows videos of it in use. It also shows videos of the 2200 in use.
This is also the feedback I gave to Revolution and Aurorra and as a result they are not pushing the 4200 pack as a 500 pack, if you read an earlier post from tonight you'll see that the testing is continuing on other options. The idea being to find something in the 2500-3000 range. This is due to us feeling that the 2200 is too small and the 4200 too big. The 2200 is still an option but only if you have a 450 and want to double up your use of the packs
The blog makes no recommendations, just shows the pack that has been used. As it happens Trev had those packs left over from testing on his 600, they weren't 'selected' for the 500 at all. They just happened to fit and do work reasonably well despite the weight.
So, please point me to the '4200 is the recommended pack for this helicopter' post that I seem to have written in my blog somewhere..... you won't find it.
The pack sizes being investigated are 2800 and 3000, they will not be available to anyone until they have been tested properly. Trev will be the test pilot as always.
So in summary, no apology necessary as you seem to have made up the 4200 pack recommendation all on your own.
Sorry, Ash.

Hi Ash/Trev sorry for not getting back sooner (Taxi for the kids) If you read back through the earlier posts trvo quite clearly stated.
" Yep, the 4200's are my favourite pack for the Trex 500, I think the little extra weight that the packs offer is great for improving the characteristics of the machine"
Now obviously pilots of the caliber of yourself and Trevor are going to be highly regarded and will certainly sway peoples opinions as to what is the best option. If that wasn't a recommendation it certainly implies that it is 'THE' pack to have, especially as by this point you had also flown the 2100's 2200's packs as a comparision.
You are now saying the pack is to heavy... Our opinion would be the 2500-3000 range would prove optimium but Mike was convinced the 4200 was the best choice due to feedback from yourselves.
The 4200 is a usefull pack but is well outside the range most people should be looking at due to its weight although it will be a reasonable sports pack.
cheers Brian..Merry Xmas to all..Last edited by barney; 25-12-2007, 12:50 AM.
