the velcro soaks up the vibes really well, and as im only just learning inverted circuits at the mo im not having any probs with the extreme moves that everyone raves about, it will be quite a while before im at that level and by then most if not all helis will be fbl and great gyros will be ALOT cheaper and i prefere not to have to rely on a pc to set it up.

that is best sales line i've ever heard for convincing yourself new gyros are not worth upgrading to..................NOT.

since you say your learning inverted right now you will very very quickly find out where the 401 limits are. try flying backwards inverted and try the rudder..........warning-be very high :-)

however on the original post i wouldn't buy a 401 anymore, far better gyros out there for same money. was a GREAT gyro in its day,no question.

      cheers

wow suprised to see a GY401 thread. Great gyro for normal flying but well dated now. I would still use one if you could program the tail slider limits on the gyro itself. You have to fiddle about with end points on your transmitter and limit pot on the gyro to get the piro rate to be any good.

Pretty old hat nowadays and so many better gyros can be had for the price.

still a good gyro, and is an easy fit and forget job, has sat on my 450 with no problems, when CSM and Align gyros would wag like an excited dog

also got one on my Trex 600 and i have seen Paul heckles fly that, believe me its good enough for anything i'm likely to do

i rest my case, IMO why waste money i dont have on a gyro thats gonna have more probs than the one i already have just cos thats what everyone else has got!!!

if it wagging then turn the gain down fool lol

gy401, fine if u wanna fly forwards, not to great flying backwards, why pay that sort of cash for something when u can get better for cheaper??? and u dont need a pc for a spartan lol

New they are too expensive now, but secondhand bargains are out there
Whilst very true, it is still a pointless purchase considering a spartan is quite a bit better, yet cheaper.

Like any gyro it has to be set up correctly to get the best from it.

Its probably one of the best gyros to tolerate bad set up and vibes. That's why many like them as they are fit and forget on alot of machines and easy to work for a beginner.

As others have said its very old in gyro tech terms. I would not buy a new one but a good, second hand one for £40ish is good if all you want is a simple, easy to set up gyro.

I had a 401 with a 9253 servo years ago and managed backwards inverted flight and backwards loops with a Rappy 50.

Upgraded to CSM720 which gave locked in backward flight and consistant piros but was harder to set up and get right.

So let me put this in perspective..... instead buying any cheaper, current, better performing car.. you would rather pay more for a dinosaur 1982 Ford XR3i (because it was great at the time) and does still does the basic job.. even though the current cheaper basic Fiesta does everything better for less money! I must open a showroom of antiques and invite you guys along!

If it was me buying a gyro right now it would be a Spartan. The CSM720 although a fantastic gyro is less tolerant towards airframe vibes etc so can be a bit fickle to set up well. I wouldn't however buy a new 401 purely because its old hat and you can get better for similar money .

I had a 401 and for learning it was ideal but i never paid a lot of money for it 2nd hand and paired it with a brand new 9254. I think from memory i only paid £50 for it and that was 4 years ago! I wouldn't have paid full money for it then either because the 720 was readily available and Spartan were not long on the scene!
