  • Charmouth mud bath

NOTE this is not a winge or whine.

Whilst not wishing to detract too much from the weekend the organisation does need to be tightened up regarding contingency plans for when the field is basically too wet to use................. Access to the field was poorly controlled and without prompting a couple of us stood guard on the gate only letting 4 x 4's through otherwise the mess would have been even bigger. As it was we turned our backs for five minutes and another tranche of 'normal' cars then ended up in the mire before finally we stuck the notice accross the access road preventing anybody else from entering. To hear from one of the organisers (I think) that the night before he only just got out in a 4x4 and the last time it was in that field the same happened !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Come on gents have a plan ready because sure as anything with the weather pattern as it is it is going to happen again.............

To be fair that is one thing they can't organise is the weather, and all the feilds in that area would of had the same problem, the weather the week before was really wet.
But come rain or shine charmouth went ahead and just a few tows and pushes were required.
I took the safe option on sunday and parked outside

            i agree james
it just one of them things
if it was a club field then maybe yes they could prepare better as money coming from the funfly would assist with hardcore etc
but lets get real, its a fantastic event-well done to the guys for organising it-we need more events/flyins in the uk-so lets get some arranged
our field was wet yesterday also.but i wasnt a major problem....
            im trying do my bit

I don't know about other people but I have this thing in my head called a brain. This device is very handy in these situations. It prompted me to park out on the road with my 'normal' car.

Big thumbs up to the organisers at Charmouth, fantastic event as per usual.

I think the main problem was on the Saturday Paul.
There was a rather expensive 4x4 that actualy beached itself
on entering the field it eventualy had to be removed by tractor.

I didnt think it was wise letting cars park on the main track into the field,
that was the only mistake made.
Had the track at the left of the gate been left clear bar only for the burger van
& TX control & raffle vehicle I dont think there would have been half the trouble getting on & off the field.
I did however feel the AHA in poor conditions did a sterling job of making good
of what they were left with by the farmer so Hats off to them >

Yes Sunday the track was used
                  Trev is right again
I did see people getting them self stuck
I thought it was fun no need to moan

when we went in sunday, someone was on the gate telling cars where to park and what way to face(rear or front wheel drive) a couple of cars got slightly stuck and we all just gave a little push (part of going to any event like this) sounds like the saturday it was worse and lessons learnt for the sunday, but you have to take your hats off to them for doing there best, and making it a succesful event

In my opinion the AHA guys did great and I'm sure everyone got out of the field fine. It was a learning experience for them as it was for all of us of course. They clearly did their utmost to ensure we flew at all.

If you have constructive suggestions to make including offers of help for gate duty, why not email the AHA directly instead of ridiculing them publicly on here?

I really don't get all the moaning about the field. It's not like it was a surprise that you turned up to a field, in rural Devon, at the end of a wet winter, to find it was a bit soggy? Seriously, it is what you make of it. Personally, yeah it was very muddy in places, but we were there to fly, which we did, and I for one enjoyed it. When people got stuck, everybody mucked in and got everyone moving, or the tractor came to the rescue. If you don't wanna risk getting dirty/stuck, then wait til summer before attending fly-ins etc, even then your not guaranteed good weather!

On the Sunday, the guys from the AHA who were organising it all (and whom without the event wouldnt happen) clearly learnt a little from the Saturday and ensured everybody parked a bit more sensibly. A good call that saved a lot of grief.

I'm sure next time we will be back on the usual field, and normality will return

I thought it was great. Left my van in the road but then again I didn't have loads of helis and stuff to unload. The ones that got stuck got pushed out as others have said so it was all good

Had to be honest it did bring a smile to my face on Saturday to see £40,000+ worth of "Britains" finest stuck fast in what really looked like only a small amount of mud
