Take a look in the For Sale section for a copy of Phoenix and the Dongle, second hand £50ish. Don't rule out AccuRc either, I know some have had some issues but I know others who love it.

Here you go ebay £30 at the moment

No the license is in the dongle, thats what you're buying really as the updates are free of charge. Once you get to 2.5 you need an update to 3 which we can help you with and then the auto updates take over and they will bring you up to the latest version.

Right I'll get on eBay and check the Sim out, Looking at the Pelecases for the Pad think I may need one now ! Argh ..
Right so it's the DX8 Im buying just because saving a few quid for a few extra packs and I just think the higher end DX18 stu mentioned will most likely be waisted on me at that level , also for what I get with the DX8 for £150 it's a very good deal really ..

as as for Heli think I'll Go no smaller than the 500 and leave it to next month so I'm not rushing In ! Get some Sim time in and get some more Heli education in to me as I've learnt already lots of quality Info here on the boards and previous topics .. Thanks for all the help here in this thread gents

As others have said, if the prices were close then it's worth going with the DX9 but the prices are not at all close and the DX8 can be had so much cheaper.

Regarding the Trex 500 in wind. It does quite well in the wind because it's just that tiny bit big enough (roughly 2kg compared to something like a 450 at 700-800 grams) to have a little mass behind it and more importantly it is slightly on the porky side when it comes to disc loading.

Thanks Trilian ,No idea about the feel of it in air , I have a Phantom2 Vision+ Which is very easy to fly about but handles wind really well tbh! Any of the 4ch choppers I've flown Hbee etc. Have been very bad in just slight gusts.. Does the Flight Simulator have a wind simulation as well on there ?

                hi anth
Have you thought about a micro heli such as the blade mcpx bl or the blade 130x to get started with?
they both use linear servos which take a beating and are Fairly "crashable" so great for learning!!
be careful with the little one you posted a picture of, the sticks on the transmitter (tx)might do completely different things compared to a dx8 so it might cause you to have to start again learning the controls :-/
The only reason id not get a 500 straight away is because of the fear factor slowing the learning curve down alot! But if your quite confident after some time on the sim you should be fine.

Hi Paul , yes the little fella was just for the baby really but as you've just said in your post I too thought as the gyro glided it around the living room for him ! " shit this really is a bad start to Brain training for the Spectrum !" Lol

ill getbthe Sim set up next week and I'll re program myself !

I've browsed the Blades but as the budget is there for something bigger I wanted to start fairly big .. As my last post what are blades like with moderate/small wind conditions the 130x looked pretty compact?

The simulators I have used (RealFlight and Phoenix) have adjustable wind simulation. You can have different settings of constant wind and gusts, the randomness and frequency of gusts etc. It's not quite the same as real life but still quite useful.

There's no substitute for real-life wind. I haven't found a simulator that comes anywhere near correctly emulating the massive lift you get when the wind gets under the rotor disk, and conversely, the way the wind tries to slam the heli into the ground when you make a correction.

yeah, some would call micros a lot of fun, some would call them an absolute nightmare. The more basic CP micros may be 'relatively' ok because they are simple and reasonably robust, but the higher performance ones like the Blade 130 or Trex 150 can be VERY hard work and very frustrating. They are hard to fly, much harder than larger helis, very VERY easy to crash and they break quite easily. When they do break repair is very tricky and frustrating (unless you repair watches as a hobby). Personally after unbelievable frustration with a Trex 150 I'll never touch another micro. No doubt some will report very different experience but if nothing else it's a bit of a lottery.

If you want something to practice with in the house that isn't going to break, then get a Blade Nano QX quad. I keep saying it on loads of beginner threads, but it is an awesome little indoor trainer and in agility mode responds just like a CP heli. Having loads of fun with mine while learning full CP cyclic control. I've also got a Blade mCX2 which is a 4ch co-axial micro. Very easy to fly and much better than my Syma 107 with its proper swashplate control. It's too stable to teach full cyclic control but it's great for practice landings, flying precise circuits in a small space, throttle control, orientation etc. It's actually easier to fly than the Syma as you have full control of lateral movement and the forward/backward flight is much more precise than the tail fan on the Syma. It's a great heli for the kids to play with too.

I have also have a 130X (Red Bull scale version) but haven't dared to fly it yet and there are lots of parts to break! I expect it will be a pain in the arse to keep flying, but I couldn't resist it on sale for £95. I'm not going to touch this until I can fly properly.

or just get a proper helicopter. i got my nano for £60, same price as the qx. and it has grown with me. you also get used to some of the fundamentals of setting up helicopters such as pitch curves, mechanical setup etc. that you dont get with a quad.

I'd love to get a Nano at some point in the near future, but the point with the nano quad is that it is zero maintenance and there is literally nothing to break on it. Plus the safe mode makes it properly flyable in a small room from the off without any fear of damage to either the quad or furniture. The Nano looks much more difficult to get into and to keep flying.
