I think I need to tame my DX8 for the sim maybe , it's just got so much forward motion on the sim with the 500 a hover can turn in to bedlam in no time ! Everything seems to be responsive , rudder is set to 25% .

If I was buying something like that used, I'd only do it through a known source like a club, reputable shop or perhaps a well known member on this site. Basically I'd want to be reassured I wasn't buying a pile of junk.

I hear you with the ebay purchases , but they are what they are surly air frame and electronics , and if this stuff is not flown how much of a pile of junk can on be?
Its like anything really you but if you go second hand your always taking a chance someone could sell you a complete lemon ! Just have seen the 500s for little money on ebay makes me think twice about spending £550 on when RRP !

I work in mechanical engineering and it never ceases to amaze me how badly things can be put together and often trashed in the process. Stripped threads, over-torqued bolts, spacers missing, bearings not seated correctly, etc, etc, etc. Although I have no experience of RC helis yet, I imagine there is plenty of scope to trash a kit during build if you are hamfisted enough. The last thing I would want as a beginner with a relatively large heli is unknowns. I'd want to build it myself and have it checked and setup by someone experienced with RC helis. Even as an experienced mech eng I'd be wary of messing up the build and setup. I would buy used, but I would need to be totally confident in the seller's credibility. I imagine it's a bit like buying used cars in many ways i.e. a minefield if you don't know what you're doing.

I agree the slandered of Mech skills can be somewhat shocking ! .. And with Helis there's lots of untrained people out there carrying out jobs there just incompetent to do , I'm certainly in no rush to buy and now I'm finding it difficult to maintain a hover with the 500 on the sim I could be a while !

Could someone advise this transmitter configure is ok I'm not sure if the ch5/6 are doing anything they don't seem to be .

went for this case in the end the one Ste taged was out of stock it's a pretty good home for it , I've added the Spektrum neck strap to it but it could do with a better handle or a strap to hold it .

Regarding mistakes in build. You could make a very good argument that buying second hand from a trustworthy and experienced heli flyer greatly reduces the chance of mistakes in build and setup compared to a newbie doing it all himself?
The idea that the chance of build mistakes is eliminated if you build you self is clearly flawed, especially so if you haven't built heli or RC models before.

I agree with this completely, the key words being "trustworthy" and "experienced". It's a very different concept buying second hand from a well known and experienced club member rather than from some random dude on ebay. I have no experience of RC helis at this level, but they seem to have a high proportion of parts that wear out or break and therefore need regular maintenance. I do however have a lot of experience of high end mountain bikes, which also suffer from crash damage and heavy wear and tear. I wouldn't go anywhere near used gear for those.

Edit: Also depends to some extent on your engineering ability I guess. I'm pretty confident I could build one of these without mistakes, but my wife certainly wouldn't be!
