Whilst elec's are the in thing and I have absolutley nothing against them. I would have to agree that IC would be my prefered route for starting up on a 600 size machine. Just follow the manufacturers settings for initial setup of the engine and your away, fine tuning takes time but by that time your in the air. I've had OS Hypers and now a YS50 no complaints at all with the YS runs sweet and hasn't really moved off the factory setup yet.

Yes you carry more gear around and have the cleaning to keep on top of but for me its all worth it. Plus you can't beat the smell of nitro in the morning.!!
    Cheers

Speaking from experience, if you already have a radio, you'll need a spare £1k to get a 600 in the air. I used a second hand 601 gyro, and a pair of second hand 6S Aurorra lipos in order to save some money get in the air without breaking the bank too much, so my total bill was just £1050 since I already had my Futaba 9C radio.

For a T-Rex 450 you'd be looking at about half that.

The 600 is definitely very stable, but it's also BIG. You definitely need space to fly it - it's not really one for you local small park or back garden, where a 450 could be.

Each has their pros and cons but on the whole I do like my 600.

      Cheers - Rob.

That'll be Alan Szabo! Arguably one of the best R.C Heli pilots in the world at the moment, if not the best!

He can make any heli look good..!!! (Not that the T-Rex 600 isn't good )

After 18 months of flying electric helis only I've not long started flying a 600 Nitro. The thing that attracted me back was the Align 2 in 1 unit which provides regulated power to the receiver from a 2 cell lipo plus onboard glow so no leads or glow sticks to bother with. Second attraction was the new CSM SmartCarb which automatically adjusts the main needle in flight to prevent running lean so giving consistent engine runs. I was using a governor previously so this was a must fit, if fact all things that make it more like flying an electric heli I still hate getting fuel on my hands and having to clean the oil off the heli, my 600E is well over 12 months old and still looks like new but the factor that swung it was that the two Flightpower 4900 6S packs I use on the 600E are starting to fade after around 130-150 cycles so I was faced with a bill for up to £400 for replacements.

If you are not going to fly with a club and maybe use sites which are a little small then something smaller than the 600 might be better, the Logo 500 runs 500mm blades so perfoms better in a smaller location, in fact it's got a better power to weight ratio than the 600E so performance is better

The Align 2 in 1 comprises a large regulator unit plus a satellite unit with an on/off switch, glow push button and led battery condition indicator. The unit uses a 1900mAh 2S lipo, nominal 7,4V input and drops it to a 5.8V output which connects into the receiver battery port. The regulator unit also has an eart lead that you connect to the motor (I use one of the backplate fixing screws) plus a crocodile clip that fits on the glow plug. When the unit is switched on if you push the button on the satellite unit it lights the glow for 15 seconds, there's a green led to show it's activated and an orange led to show the glow is on, if the orange led doesn't glow then either you have a wiring fault of the glow plug has blown.

The 50 Hyper motor has a 2 needle carb although the mid range needle now only has a very small range of adjustment, not like the old days! For more info on the SmartCarb try this http://www.real-kbase.co.uk/csm_mixture.html It really does work and it's a pretty simple system to set up.

That's awesome....so what about starting ? Is it still a car battery with a bbig cone thing on top with a huge hand held torque device.... I remember the days when if the engine got flooded the bloody starter just produced tons of white dust ...then you had to back of the glow till you emptied the piston chamber then tighten it and start again.... Tell me this has gone and I'm nearly converted again

For starting there are a few self-contained starters that use various types of rechargable batteries, Revolution sell a geared electric starter http://www.revolutionmodels.co.uk/ac...ssories_8.html about half way down the page, s friend of mine is using this on his 600N and it works pretty well. I'm using a more traditional starter but with a rubber battery holder that holds two 6 cell buggy packs in series. I'm also using a starter shaft that screws into the end of the starter shaft so you don't need to keep shoving it back into the rubber liner inside a cup, plus it's got a one way bearing built in so it doesn't kick back.

Of course, if you flood it you've still got the same problem

I was in your shoes a couple of months back and ended up going for the T-Rex 450 SE. I too didn't want to go down the Nitro route and had to decide between 450 and 600. The 450 is the only one you can sensibly fly indoors, and by that I mean a sports hall rather than your living room. The LiPo batteries are relatively cheap for the 450 at about £40 each, so it will cost you less in setting up. True, the 600 is more stable, but is also more intimidating.

Worth investing in a 2.4Ghz radio system like the Spektrum DX7 also.

I would also advocate building your heli from scratch. I learnt so much in doing so - it will help you understand how to set the heli up to fly right as it's not just a case of bolting the parts together as per the instructions. Whether you go for 450 or 600, there are some great videos on helifreak.com, follow this link

                          http://www.helifreak.com/forumdisplay.php?f=60

I understand your reservations about a club. I have yet to find one that is not riddled with beaurocracy and beards.

One must have is a simulator, Phoenix is the one to get and it will save you a fortune in the long run.

                          Hope this helps

Another person in a similar position. For me it's a hobby I want to dip in and out of when it suits me - quick fly on the way to work, after work over the local playing field, hovering practice in the garden etc.etc. Because the local clubs are rather a long way away, travelling to a club would mean committing 1/2 a day to it. That's not what I want. So for me, because of noise issues, electric is the only solution. But I had to decide between a 600 and 450 size, and that wasn't so clear cut.

It was all horribly confused for me because, when practicing on Phoenix, I could fly the 600 so much better than the 450. Now either something clicked with me or Phoenix changed a little but now I'm pretty happy with the 450 so will almost certainly get one. But deciding wasn't made any easier when I found out that Align are bringing out a T-Rex 500 but I can't wait for it

But Phoenix and a TX were the first things I bought!

                            Cheers

The Mikado Logo 500 is a good compromise between the Trex 450 & 600 although it may be a little more than you want to spend. I bought a 500 3D because I wanted a heli around this in between sort of size and couldn't wait for the Trex 500 either, plus I saw the Logo's flying at 3DM
