  • £200 and no Heli - recomendations please!

    Hi,

I have been having a look through this great site and spotted loads of really friendly advice.

    I want to buy a heli, my first (unless you include a Picoo Z) and was hoping some of you may be able to give me some advice at what to look at. I have looked through a number of posts from people asking similar questions but realise the answer is quite dependant on the individual need. I have tried to list out my requirements;

    1. Electric Power - Why, I live right near a large park and would like to be able to nip out to fly it when the conditions are right. I also need to be flexible to head out when I get a chance (we have a new baby which means I can only head out when the chance arrises). A petrol flown at a club would be a great next step but not right now I think.

    2. Low price. Max £200. I have £100 at the ready and can probably muster another £100 without too much trouble from my wife, but this is really my limit at the moment. I can see the benefits of spending more but to see if I can really get into the hobbie I think this is the limit of my budget until I get hooked.

    3. Skill level - Low, I flew RC planes and real planes a little in my teens (15 years ago) and know the general laws of physics on full size helicopters (I have flown a training Heli simulator) but in practical terms I have never flown one (appart from the picco Z!). So I need something that can handle my inexperience. I would of course love to do all kinds of aerobatics but in reality realise this will take quite a time.

    4. Simulator - I would really like one of these but as a mac owner this seams a bit tricky. Are there any for macs? If not then I could bring home my work laptop PC?

Looking through the other posts these seam to be a couple of good options I have

    A. Century Mini-pred. About £190. User philimon suggested including the following to another user, Hitech HS55 servo @ £10 and 1 x 1700mah 3S lipo @ £30 making this total £230. Importantly for me this includes a SIM so I can practise before I fly (is the SIM any good?). At the absoloute limit of my spend! Seams like this may be a bit tricky but with the SIM I may be able to manage it

    B. Twister medivac, contra rotating heli. About £100. Seam safe and conservative but maybe the right level. I would also need a SIM though and a controller for the SIM, which brings it almost as high as A?

    C..... more ideas welcome.

Thanks in advance for any advice, please let me know if any other info would help with advice!

    Cheers

      Ha.. poor bloke..
I started of with a guy showing me a PiccoZ on a website. I wanted one.. then saw a Lama V3.. and said, I'd prefer that. Got it. Wife was blown away that I blew £75 for a toy!
Then, saw a Trex 450 on YouTube, so... got that. Wife was even more ****ed that I just blew £500 for the heli and TX!
Then, decided I want a fuel heli... so got the Raptor 50 V2! *Wife has since left me, but not before striking an axe through the bonnet of my car, and sticking needles in some wee doll that's lying on my bed.
      Hobby going well so far!

      * Wife hasn't left me, nor done voodoo on me, nor the axe.. but, I believe that's just around the corner.
      Trex 500CF - GY401 with S9254, HS-5245MGs, Torque Tube, AR7000..
      Blade CX2 - With AR6100
      Spectrum DX7 Tx (2.4Ghz), Phoenix Sim (1.05c)
      Based in Brisbane , Australia!
      Past helis: Lama V4, Raptor 50, Trex450SE, Gaui EP550

£200 and no Heli - recomendations please!
Hmmm, MAC at home... limited budget...little flying experience...

Given the problems you're going to have with running a flight sim, the contra-rotating medivac is probably a better option. Its an indoors-only model, though, for all intents and purposes.

The mini-pred type heli (collective pitch) is much better suited to outdoors, but it really does require practise a flight sim.

This sounds perfect for you budget,
But beware it will be harder to learn on and you WILL be spending
            money on parts.

              Thanks for your help,

I am pressuming that the MAC is no good for sims so I guess it is down to the laptop - maybe my lunch hours are going to be filled with practise!

Philimon - sent you a message about the heli with a couple o' questions, look forward to hearing from you.

              Thanks

ESC stands for 'Electronic Speed Controller' and it is used to vary the speed of the electric motor.

                    Cheers

I reckon go for a contra rotating heli such as a medivac (around £100) and get a copy of Pheonix (around £80) for your Laptop.

The heli is easy to fly (relatively ) and Pheonix isn't as processor hungry as some others so I am told. The only thing I don't know is if you can use the controller that comes with the Medevac for connecting to your laptop for Pheonix. Can others help here?
                        Cheers, Lee.

i believe the new medevacs do not have the training plug thing. however my twister bell 47 tx does....not really sure why they changed it!!

so guess if u bought a 2nd hand bell 47 you'd be alright. but then it woudnt be all nice and crash free...

True, but as we all know "There's those that have crashed and there are those that are going to crash"
