  • WTF!! Lipo fail.

    Hi,

I have just finished setting up my Outrage G5, took her outside with training gear on, got her light on the skids, trimmed rudder and then took her up to a height where the training balls where just tickling the ground and then I had a sudden loss of power.

Brought her down instantly, whipped canopy off to discover a bloated batt pack. Left it a while for the bloatiness to go down and then stuck it on my align tester to discover 6s had now become 5s.

This is my first CP heli and the only experience I have with lipo's is on my blade cx2.

Surely these packs are not this fragile? Can you think of anything I may have done/set wrong for this to happen?

I charge these packs on a cellpro 10s, well i have charged this pack once!!

I have another pack ready to go in but i am fearful I have caused this somehow and need your advice before I lose near on £80 instead of £40.

    Matt.

That sounds bad if its the first charge,... get in touch with the supplier and get a replacement sent

The only thing I can think of that could be wrong is that there is too much load on the motor and it drew too much current for the lipo.
This could be a problem with the tail belt causing a lot of friction, so first check everything turns easily.

Next it could be that you are lifting off at too low rpm and flying with too much pitch and not enough throttle.

If you flew nitro before then its normal to have a hover at 50% throttle or less. With electric it is quite different and normaly the throttle is 80% or more in the hover. Something like 75% at zero degrees and 100% at +10 degrees.

Of course its possible you got a duff lipo. The supplier should exchange it. A few minutes of hovering at whatever pitch shouldn't overload the lipo as much as full on 3D.
Outrage are supposed to have a good exchange policy anyway...

I would expect nothing less than a brand new lipo in exchange for that Matt.

Be sure to return it asap to where ever you purchased it from..

yep, sounds like a dud, I've got five of the Outrage 6S 1300s, no issues to speak of so far other than I had a balance connector go dodgy on me. I just stuck another one on, seems fine.

thanks for all your help guys. I will phone Rupert and get it sorted out in the morning.

Fingers crossed on the weather too and i may get fully off the ground tommorrow.

On a side note, when I put the align tester on the working pack I have left, the first 5 cells are within .01v of each other but the 6th reads about .4 below the rest. Is this normal?

Your battery pack is only rated for 32.5 amps (1.3 X 25) but your esc is rated to 40amps. With a 6S pack on a hi performance heli you could be very close to the limit. I think some battery packs might fail. You are using the manufacturers packs though so they should be guaranteed. LiPos are not as robust as NiCd and NiMh and the ratings are sometimes optimistic. Hopefully you have just been unlucky. What current did you charge at?

                        No, it's not that's a dead cell.

have you tried to charge the battery back up? 2a is a little fast and will effect the long term life of the battery but shouldnt cause this.

if you have the usb lead for the charger plug it in whilst charging and log the charge.

I do not have the usb lead.

What should I charge at to ensure longer pack lifespan? Longer than 1 charge any how

Should I try and recharge the pack that I thought was ok, but on a slower rate?
