    Hi people!

This is my first post and I thought I would introduce myself to the community. I am assuming the Beginners section is most appropriate for this.

    Me....

Andrew. Around 34 (I can never remember exactly how old I am!). Live in the Bolton area of the UK.

    The history....

I did an OND and HND after leaving school. The subject? Pro audio and video. Then I started a relatively healthy career in IT because I didn't much fancy moving to London for work in pro audio and video. After working in IT for 10 years, I began to wonder whether I should consider moving back to my old passion. So I did a bit of research on the internet and found that pro video had gone digital. Everything is now edited on a PC as opposed to an expensive three deck setup. I did a bit more research and decided that a video company would compliment both my pro audio and video skills along with my IT skills. The result of this is my relatively new small business which I run along side my full time career. My website:

    www.carillonvideo.co.uk

Moving on, I have always had a fascination with aircraft and helicopters. I always say my interest in these wonderful machines would have had my career develop in the airline industry, as a pilot. I was that certain I could do it. Alas, a hearing disibility put paid to that. So I find other ways to satisfy my flying interests. I have a mate who has a PPL (Private Pilot License) and we have been for several rides around the North West. The great thing is, he can't charge me because that would be beyond his PPL and considered Commercial Piloting! How cool?

I have a fairly long and extensive history with MS Flight Sim and more recently FSX. I got myself a nice Quad Core machine to run my video edit suite and of course, FSX.

    The present....

A recent hospital stay caused me to be unable to drink for the next six months or so. Suddenly, I am living overdraft free, which is always a bad thing for me!

And then one day at work last week I got bored. I went online. I searched for something interesting. What could marry my IT skills with my pro audio and video interests? But also take into account my love of all things flying? Found it:

    www.whirlybird.com

Now I found this website fascinating. I want one! Too bad that setup costs over 20K dollars! So I figured, being a sensible guy and all that, I would have to learn to fly RC helicopters before I could get anywhere near a proper setup. I did some more research and visited my local model shop which turned out to be a busy little place (I thought models went out of fashion years ago with the introduction of games consoles?). I spoke to the friendly Brian. He recommended something cheap just like the sticky on this forum. Mash or Comanche counter rotating blades? I went home and hammered YouTube. Didn't like either of those helis and so I went back and bought a Venom Night Ranger 3D Micro. Cost me £140.00. Alas, when I got it home I noticed a crack in one of the blades. Then I noticed the blade was slightly bent. Then I noticed the underside of the blade had many cracks and I figured probably best not to fly it. I took it back and I'm awaiting a replacement. It should arrive today. That means that this post is pre-first-flight.

So, all being well, I pick up my new heli this afternoon. I think it's going to be a busy week. It'll start with me trying to learn to hover over the bed and all the while I will be thinking that one day I will buy an RC heli that will lift a Sony PD-170 along with its anti vibration and tracking equipment, to do some seriously good videography. A dream? Perhaps. But here's to fun along the way.... Hello people! I now consider myself introduced!

    Kind regards,

    Andrew.

Hi Andrew, I agree - welcome to the money pit.

As much as you might not like the aesthetics of the contra-rotating helicopters, they are a great tool to learn with - the smaller single rotor helicopters are a challenge for most experienced pilots to fly. The computer simulator is also a massive help. Can I suggest also that you find a club local to you so that someone can show you the ropes. Good luck and welcome!

p.s. You're going to NEED third party insurance before you fly! ! try www.bmfa.org.uk

Well done for opening your wallet to flying heli's,

I did teach myself to fly a 450 t rex which was quite expensive and at times disheartening. However i've done it and am proud of it.
Mind you it would have been cheaper and easier with a sim and some lessons straight away. Some people don't like the sims though.

          Happy flying.

I think this R/C helicopter thing is harder than it looks. Just getting a working model is proving tough! I got the first one and had to take it back because the blades were cracked and bent. The shop said the replacement would come in Tuesday. It finally came in tonight (Thursday) after the MD of the distribution company drove one to the shop! How mad is that?

Then I spent a while trying to get the thing flying. Actually, that's not accurate. I spent a while trying to get the rotors to actually turn. I eventually sussed out that not only do you have to throttle all the way back to start the rotors, you also have to TRIM throttle all the way back. Then suddenly it kicks in. Not sure why.

So, I've been trying to fly my first flight. I just wanted to hover it a bit in the living room. I throttle up and it gets light and twitchy. Then it pulls to the left and so I trimmed to the right to correct that. After a bit more power, it spins to the left and despite the rudder being trimmed all the way over to the right it continues to spin to the left. When it finally leaves the ground it shoots left and all I can do is drop it down again. So, altitude record so far is about 80mm. Distance record is about 800mm. Longest single flight time is about 1.2s and my foot really, really hurts because I caught it with a rotor!

I guess I need to get someone to look at the setup for me and assist? Or perhaps bury my head in the manual for a few hours and play around with it? Ready To Fly indeed! :-)

                    Laters,

                    A.

I have to concur with everyone else's comments, A sim and a lot of money are necessity. I started wanting a cheap indoor machine, then I started wanting to mount a small camera, now I want a bigger machine to mount the camera on, as contra helis don't really have much power to weight spare.

If aerial video is what you like to do then mate, you are gonna love this hobby to bits.

                        Welcome to the fun.

Okay okay, a sim is next. :-) I get it. I used FSX loads after buying a super fast PC. Does that not count somewhat?

I think half my problem is, the gyro isn't set up properly. I will have a play around with it tonight. The manual isn't very clear about how to set gyro gain. It involves flicking one of the DIP switches ON, turning the knob on the TX and then switching the same DIP to OFF.

The gyro must be functioning though. I reckon it is because the tail rotor doesn't seem to spin when the main rotor spools up, until the helicopter starts to lighten and then as soon as it moves, the tail spools up. Just not enough to stop it rotating.

                          Regards,
                          A.

I wouldn't say aerial video or even aerial photography is my thing. I haven't ever gotten airborne yet. But video from the air was my primary reason for checking out R/C helicopters and thus is the reason I got this far. I might never get good enough to do any serious video work from such an unstable platform (read, a lot less stable than the tripod I use for wedding videos!).

                            We shall see.

Anyone out there ever seen a professionally produced wedding video? Probably. Anyone out there ever seen a professional wedding video that features aerial video shots of the church and surrounding area? Probably not. Maybe I can make it my unique selling point?
