spektrum servo's are ok in a 30 they are no good for a 50 however!!

"The DS821 servo is a powerful, accurate sport digital servo recommended for RC airplane applications up to 1.20-size. For helicopters, the DS821 operates best with 30-size glow models, and up to 50-size electric. Loads and vibration in larger models may cause premature failure of the servo resulting in damage or injury to property and persons.
Important: Do not use liquid thread lock with the DS821 servo!
Do not use any form of liquid thread lock to secure the servo arm screw to the output shaft of the DS821 servo. Chemicals in these liquids react with the polycarbonate gear set causing the plastic to become brittle, fracturing the final output gear."

taken from spektrums own product information site!!

      Spektrum servos

Well, ya learn somethin new every day. I had previously only seen comments about the Spektrum servos on the helifreaks forum but nothing about vibration.

I still have a new set that came with my DX7 that I have not used and the only reason they are on the Raptor is because I bought it already built with those servos on it. But this is making me seriously consider changing them out. I can use them on the next plank I get or something.

Well this has been discussed before many times..

I used these servos for many months learning to hover and steady eights with no problems at all..

Only when you get to throw the heli around more should you think about upgrading IMO..

These servos should be more than adequate for me during the hover stage of my learning but I will eventually change them.

Hello again. I'm looking for some advice on purchasing field starting equipment, currently I have nothing other than a hand fuel pump.

I have seen the Thunder Tiger Carrymaster and the Ripmax Moulded Flight Box combo for online, both at a cost of £99. Is it worthwhile buying one of these or can you recommend individual items which I may be better buying instead for a similar cost? Essentials I need are a 12v battery and charger, glow spanner with charger, starter and hex extension. At this time I'd probably also order a field charger.

A quick update. My hovering and slow directional movement is coming along nicely, had plenty of flights now and even finished my first bottle of fuel

I've decided to invest in a cheaper heli that I can try be more adventurous with and not worry about huge costs to fix. With this in mind I've today purchased a Twister Storm 3D. Several members of my club have these and they are very impressive for the total cost involved. This should hopefully help keep my Raptor in one piece for longer!

Quick question, are the Hitec HS55 servos suitable for use with the TS 3D? I'd heard that the supplied servos are not of great quality or reliability.

              Thanks

yes they will fit but you may need a stanley knife to shave the bracets till they fit smoothly

Youv'e done well Sneeks to have kept the Raptor in one piece for this length of time!
I started flying helis around the time you started and went through so many blades/main shafts/feathering shafts that I thought that I was seriously not going to be able to afford to continue.
Luckily I have since smoothed out and the crashes are fewer and farther between.
The twister seems like a good investment and moving down from the Rappy will be far less intimidating and therefore easier to control since you wont be so worried about it going in.

                    Hi Adrian

Yes that's the plan, hopefully it'll work out well and my flying will progress with less stress. I think my 1.5 months of sim use prior to having my Raptor ready for flight has definitely helped keep it in one piece. I now need new blades for the Raptor as they have warped slightly and the protective coating ripped free last weekend. I'll probably remain with wooden blades for now. All the best with your own flying.

Thanks for the advice Ron, my TS 3D has just arrived at work

                      • I very nearly had my first crash tonight with the Storm. During slow forward flight towards some long reeds the battery power dropped and caught me unaware, this is the first time I'd flown it long enough for the power to drop. The sudden difference in feel and control caught me out and the heli started to fall fast and sideways towards the reeds. After a second of brain fade I finally input enough control to level it out and land it somewhat hard on the grass, no damage done. Very scary.

I've also changed fuel (20% Magnum from 10% Coolpower) and reset the mixture settings today on my Raptor 30. Finally got it running better but it does tend to cut out when close to a quarter tank left if sitting at idle on the ground. As soon as I raise the throttle it splutters to a halt, any suggestions why? Possibly too lean or a plug problem?

I bought the Storm from Model Shop Leeds, cost me £119

The Cumbernauld club is great, lots of helpful members. Head along one Sunday, that's the best day to catch the heli crowd.

                              • It's been a long time since I last posted in this thread. My flying abilities have not progressed as much as I would have liked due to lack of real flight time at the club but I hope that will improve in the new year. Some photos from today.
