    Good beginner rc helicopter

Also, bashing people for buying expensive helis.. it would be something like bashing someone for spending £1000 on a skiing holiday, or a new bike, instead of decorating a house. A hobby is a hobby, some people can afford to prioritize fun in their lives. I sure can not, with wife and a baby, other priorities take place, but I'd never dare to make such comments like "makes me laugh", "some people just don't grow up" just because I don't have a fleet of 700s myself.

IMO, people usually respond to low budget threads to get poster a more realistic view how expensive this hobby really is. That's it.
How is wanting a micro heli an unrealistic budget? Some people just want a little heli that they can buzz about with, they don't want to own a big rc heli and do mad 3D with it and try to become pros!
I started off with a heli under £100 and it was fine and did the job and I had a lot of fun.
So who are you to come here and tell me what I can and can't say when you don't even know me! I'm allowed to have my own opinion and if you don't like my opinion then don't read it simple as that.
And to be honest with you I've never seen you posting much on here with advice.

I've done a lot in this hobby to help others out. I've come on here and I've given £100's worth of gear away over the years for FREE to beginners wanting to get into this hobby, to help them out and out of the goodness of my own heart. And yes I will say it again as you have just reiterated my point. There is heli snobbery and you have just proved me right again by saying having a '150' is an unrealistic budget. What, so you're telling me you can't get a heli and have fun with it for under £200
What a load of rubbish. Some people buy a 450 sized heli and stick with it. Not everyone gets a 450 and then moves up to a 600 or a 700 sized. It doesn't have to be that expensive.

Mark, take a look at the Turnigy 9x radio on Hobbyking. A few friends of mine have them and they even use this radio to fly FPV with as they have brilliant range. And under £50 brand new!
Again getting back to the point that it doesn't have to be an expensive hobby. I mean who 'needs' a radio that cost £500+? I've seen a bloke with a radio that was £1900! And he wasn't a 3D god lol! So like what's the point, the radio doesn't make you fly better lol!
Have a look mate and you'll see what radio I'm on about they even do a Turnigy 9xr. But I'm pretty sure all the seasoned 'proffesionals' on here will still rubbish it as it's under a £100 lol!

Does it really matter what value someone puts on something in this hobby Grant, if your mate with the £1900's worth of Tx can afford it then surely it's his perogative as is the £2000 worth of TDR, Kasama doesn't matter whether he's a 3D skygod or not. Its the same argument with an old duffer buying a Calaway driver for £500 without the ability to use it, but it's his money and up to him.

The seasoned professionals you talk about I'm not sure I know any on here, there are a few supported pilots, but I'm sure they wouldn't rubbish anything without trying it.

I fly on a budget mostly second hand to tell the truth but I fly a 700 with a DX7. I would like a DX9 but can't see the point at the minute as it's working fine. I wouldn't use a Turnigy Tx because it would mean changing all of the Rx's in my models. If I was starting out then that would be a different matter.

People spend money in this hobby in different ways, some have a big hanger with fantastic models, I on the other hand would rather spend my hobby budget on fuel and keeping 1 heli in excellent condition rather than buy the latest and greatest. What I will say is that without those that can afford buying the latest and greatest there wouldn't be a second hand market and I wouldn't be able to buy half of what I do that keeps me in the hobby.

Someone can get into the hobby with £150 defo, it won't be long before they need to stretch that though if they want to progress. My first heli was an eflite contra but that was years ago and it was rubbish. I tried the HoneyB King 2 and did learn to sort of hover with it but break it and try and get spares, ended up in the bin. That spurred me on for a 30 size and I ended up with a Kyosho Nexus off Ebay, hadn't found the forum at that time and went it alone. What a disaster and another £200 down the drain, so I'm now up to £500ish.

The best thing I did was buy a whole kit off ebay, Sceadu, Tx, starting equipment etc and then join a club where I could use it.

A bit of a ramble I know and to the OP take the advice on this post, Tom makes some great suggestions, don't be afraid to buy second hand and best of all welcome to the hobby.

I think you've missed what I was saying, I said that it doesn't matter how much you spend and that you don't need to spend loads in this hobby. I don't say my mate owns a tx worth £1900, I said I've seen someone with one at that price. What my point is, doesn't matter what radio you have. If it works, it works and it doesn't matter what heli you have, if it flies, it flies. What I'm saying is, some people are putting off beginners that want to get into the hobby by telling them that they need to spend thousands when this isn't true.

Yes mate you just need to buy the orange module for it as it is compatible with Spektrum. I have some orange receivers for my models and they cost me a fiver each. The same one made by Spektrum would cost £40 plus! The Turnigy 9x is basically a copy of the DX7. Easy to programme.
              Cheers,
              Grant.

Hobbyking have a Uk warehouse mate yes, the Hong Kong warehouse is cheaper but you end up paying more for the postage and having to wait. I just got loads of stuff from Hobbyking but I made a school boy error and didn't click UK warehouse and so mine all came from HK and took two weeks, a bonus was all the parts were cheaper but postage was something like £38 :0 but on the plus side I got three x 3 cell lipos for my 450 for around a fiver each! And I got a plane for £20! I'm just on with finishing the build on that now.
The Turnkgy radio will end a module that clips onto the back of the radio and all depends what system you want to use. Most people use Orange as it's compatible with most DSM radios like the Spektrum for example. I use a DX6i radio with orange receivers mate.

Get a secondhand DX6i then mate. I bought one three years ago for my mate and that set me back £40 so I'm sure you can still pick one up around that price. Then use an orange receiver in your model maybe? My orange receiver is a full range one with fail safe the R620 and that cost me I think $10 so about a fiver. Yes people will rubbish them as it's not Spektrum and more like a copy. And they will say they are more likely to fail. But my Spektrum receiver I have in my 450 that cost me £40 has failed so what does that tell you? Back to my point and it backs it up aswell that it doesn't matter if you buy expensive it all can still fail and have faults. So don't let the cheapness of Orange put you off I say.

Last time I checked, the Hobbyking Orange transmitters are compatible to Spektrum in DSM2 protocol only. The DX6i and better all use the much more reliable DSMX protocol.

Personally, I'd go for the DX6i (and ensure I got a DSMX capable one - the very early ones were also DSM2 only)

In all honesty, statistically it tells you absolutely nothing. To be able to draw any conclusions from it, you'd need to test a much higher number of units. The odd reports here and there of ones failing mean nothing unfortunately. Remember, popular brands have more units out in the field - therefore failure reports are more likely too!

Personally - I simply don't like to send my money to China for cloned technology. I prefer to spend a little extra, and support companies that invest in R&D.
