  • Gpro and Nitro Gov

    Hi,

Fitted a Gpro to my 600n and test flew it today, general feeling is good however the governor seem to be "hunting" a bit.

Engine speed is varying up and down, about a second between the high speed peeks if that makes sense? This is very noticeable at 1900 head speed, but much less obvious when in idle up at 2100.

i have not changed any values in the parameters menu so gov gain is still at default value of 30. Hunting normally needs gain reduced but thought I would check if anyone has any input on this.

    Thanks,

your post might of been little early in the day most likely get few replies when the night boys are on, I've seen a post on helifreeks showing the setup & from memory someone further down put a youtube up so ill have another look later.
Could also be worth pm Ian (coolice) even though I think he'll post anyway.

        Hey Buddy.

Yes, you're the only one flying a Gpro on a nitro

I've not flown or setup a Gpro yet on a nitro model, but from what you're describing it does sound like the gain needs to go down a bit to stop the throttle chasing too smaller variances in engine rpm change.
Back in the day when I flew nitro's with the RevLocks I had to lower the gain to stop small oscillations in engine rpm.

Of course with the cooler weather upon us your mixtures settings will no doubt change a little to, so have you flown the model without the governor working to fine tune the mixture?

This is the youtube link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSwI_h6I3eM but can't find the post on helifreaks because you get swapped with gopro searches.

So could be worth asking this chap the question.

Oh good it's so nice to be the first!!
i did spend a bit of time retuning as it was definitely about 10 degrees colder than the last outing and some richening was required, however no laptop at the field and very cold fingers meant that I was going to leave it for another day.
I will try dropping the gain and see how it goes, was hoping someone would say oh 30 is far too high needs to be 15-20, but seems I need to find out.

Thanks for the reply will let you know how it goes if the weather is fly able soon?

Well his Heli sounds ok, as you said would be nice to know if he is using the gpro gov and if so what gain value he has??

Thanks for the info I will try and ask him the questions.

                Update,
Testing today reducing the gain value from the default of 30 to 25 almost eliminated the hunting/surging, reducing it further to 23 seemed to do the trick
Hope this helps anyone else giving this a try?

                    Hi Nitro Head,
That's very low. Did you try to use a high speed servo? Mine is on its way.
By the way, is there a way to check if the governor is working, without starting the engine?
                    Thanks

Just got around to completing mine with DFC head & Gpro but now I need help setting up gov, in the app for gov setup there's a red light should it flicker if you crank the engine to know if gov works...?

                        Hey buddy.

On the throttle you're actually better sometimes to use a slower servo than a faster one, to avoid hunting in engine rpm. A servo that is moving too fast can make governor tuning difficult.

Using the status led on most governors you can check they are active and also receiving the magnet signal, but you won't know they are fully working until the model is flying with the governor on.

Thanks Ian, the S9254 could be too fast then.? which I have swapped from the S3125.
I was thinking on the side of servo speed = smoother gov, is there a servo would you recommend.

Crank testing gov are you saying it won't activate ether led in the phone app or on the gpro to tell you gov is receiving a signal.

                            You're welcome.
An example is Duncan Osbourn who actually steps down the throttle servo voltage to slow it down for governor use, it also stops the servo burning out quickly due to the constant updates in motor rpm. In conversations with them the slower speed helped produce a smoother throttle response in flight and the theory is sound, as an over active carb barrel would give the engines problem keeping up with fast changes.

Without having played with a nitro equipped model with Gpro I'm kind going by experience of the 3GX and from memory this units specific govenor led changes colour to show state (on/off) and register the magnet pickup. I would be guessing the Gpro behaves similar.

Sounds like it's going to be a matter of flying & testing, I have a step down voltage lead so could give that a try as well.
Just if I could get my head around setting options would give me better chance of getting it sorted on its first field flight.
