  • No joy with the OS55 today

Two of us down the field could not get our OS55s started for love, money or cursing.

    I personally tried/observed:-

    - new glow plug (enya no.3)
    - 2 different glow starters
    - tried with and without remote glow, there was amperage (so electrics seem okay)
    - 2 starters
    - blew through the fuel line, could not detect a blockage
    - tried factory settings on main and mid needle, low needle factory setting
    - tried 1 3/4 turns on both high and middle needles
    - no hydrolocks interestingly
    - seemed like fuel was coming out of muffler
    - took pressure hose off, and a whole bunch of fuel came out (may be something)

Muffler is a TT Hiflow 3D

As i said, a fellow flier gave up on his also.

Would be grateful for any suggestions or tests i could perform?

Sounds like you flooded it possible because of a bad glow plug to start with or engine to rich or combination of both, suggest shutting fuel off and turn over to get rid of fuel, lean off a little and then start again.
    Regards
    Paul

..or filled the muffler with fuel?

When that sorta stuff happens I find it best to tip heli on it's side for 30 mins and go drink coffee, smoke fags and look at the trees..

Are they new engines.. does the starter turn the 55? Seems like you have a pipe blockage.. just like my simular problem with my new 91HZ and Outrage pipe.. the pipe is causing my problems

Have you stripped it to see if the 55's ok?

Thanks for the suggestions, just to add:

              - the fuel lines were connected correctly
              - my engine has been stripped, cleaned and rebuilt (left carb alone)
              - before stripping the engine, i did notice a lot of fuel coming out of the inlet of the muffler

Based on the idea that the muffler is blocked, is there an easy way to unblock these things?

The only way I cleared mine is taking the pressure line off and holding it upside down, as the baffles might be a particular coned shape to prevent it going out the back (normal hole), apart from the normal atomisation.

Am I right to presume its a new engine aswell? What muffler are you using?

One way to clear a genuinely bocked muffler is to attach a hosepipe to the deflector end and run it through for 20mins..then drain and let dry.

However here it's likely it was just full of fuel from cranking. We don't get the same tars and carbons in nitro exhausts you see in gasser exhausts...
I always flush my muffler after engine rebuilds..learned that the hard way...debris gets sucked back in as part of 2-stroke

Just to answer a few of the above:

                        - the engine is about 3months old and had only 4-5 flights
                        - no bung was installed at the time
                        - pipe is a TT Highflow 3D pipe - this is about 18months old.

It could be muffler pressurization issue?

I've had this problem before, When you tilt the helicopter on the side to drain the engine of the fuel, but then would suck all the fuel back into the engine again. Typical on Align mufflers if i remember correctly, Not all Mufflers do this.

I didnt have any problems when I used the Align 50? Is the 90 pipe the same?
