  • DX7 questions

received my dx7 today and im well chuffed with it, seems to fit and feel nicer in the hands so looking forward to using it. Couple of questions though, it never came with a charger so im pretty stuffed straight away. So whats the best charger for it?

Also I dont know how to set the gyro gain up on it and use the gear switch to cycle from rate to hh, for some reason its set up on the throttle hold switch?

    I use a Trickbits charger

    TB2300 - Trickbits Spektrum DX7 Charger

    does the job

i think you can only assign it to the hold/rudder switch. Throttle hold you reassign to another switch

    maybe corrected on this

Get a servo extension lead and charge the ni-mh battery out of the Tx using your charger.

If you go into the SETTINGS menu, you will find an option "GYRO SENS". Scroll through the switch options. I set it to the RUDD D/R switch. For my gyro, I initialise in HH, so default switch position 0 is at 73%, and switch ON 1 is at 30% for gyro "NORM" mode.

For the throttle hold, I selected AUX2 switch.

I bought a dedicated NiMh charger for the TX batt. Plenty cheap on the market

I don't bother using the gyro menu, just set it up using the travel adjust menu. I have gyro on the gear switch. This retains throttle hold on the Hold / Rudder dr switch

Just plug your gain lead into the channel which gear operates

I have my gyros plugged into either the aux2 or gear channels and adjust the gain on the travel adjust menu. However if you want a gyro menu you have to hold down the "down" & "select" buttons and switch on the Tx, cycle thru til you get to the input select menu (by default it will read Gear = Gear and Aux2 = Aux2), change either one to Gyro (depending on what switch you prefer) then you will find you have gyro settings in your main menu.

There is a very good video guide on helifreak but I cant find it at the moment but I'm sure another addict will be able to point you in the right direction.

You can do the gyro a few different ways in the DX7.

If you hold the two buttons on the left ("down" & "select") while switching on the tx you'll get some basic setup menus and one has the settings for aux 2 and the gear channel.

I think the most common and logical place to put the gyro is on the gear channel.

If you set gear to 'gear' then you will control the gyro gain by using the travel adjust.

If you set the gear to 'gyro' you will get a mode where the gyro gain can be one of two gain settings and each flight mode can be preset to one or the other. You will see this gyro menu in the main edit screens.

Some people are used to using the travel adjust for gain and if you do it this way keep in mind the travel adjust goes +/- 150 so the number you'll see is not the actual gain, the atv setting will need to be a higher number because it is stretching the possible gain of 0 to 100 over a range of 150.

I have gone back and set all mine so the gear switch goes to 'gyro' and then all the flight modes are set to the up position which is adjusted to the right gain in heading hold mode because I never fly in rate mode and have no need to be able to change to rate mode in flight (and would rather not be able to by accident either).

Rudder dual-rate BTW is the same switch that is customarily used as throttle hold.

I think im going to go with the travel adjust so then the throttle hold is where I want it. thanks for the tip on the travel adjust going to 150%, so I guess what ever gain I was using on the dx6i just multiply it by 1.5 and I should be there or therabouts on the dx7.

As for the charging, im going to try soldering on some micro deans and use my robotronics competition charger

Well you can use either way of setting the gyro gain and still keep the throttle hold where it is (top switch on the right aka rudder dual rate). I use the gear channel for gyro.

The main difference between using travel adjust vs the dedicated gyro menu is that if you want to be able to flip the gear switch and go from HH to rate mode then you'd want to set it to 'gear' and use the travel adjust.

I mentioned to Gate a couple of days ago:

I run my gain settings on the Travel Adjust menu under the GEAR setting - 55% on both + and -

On my INPUT SELECT menu I have AUX2 on INH and GEAR on GEAR.

Yeah if you use the gear channel, which seems the most common choice, you can send it either to 'gear' or 'gyro' depending on which way of working suits you best. But this is not that well explained in the manual.

Agree Sheryl, confused the hell out of me.
Got used to the "throttle cut" being at the RUDD D/R switch top right on the DX6i. Now it is on AUX2 switch on my DX7, as the RUDD D/R is now the gyro sense.
At least I know and understand what I have done in the TX !!
