  • Buffer pack/Backup guard

Curious to know what people are running.

I havent been using these up until now, but as my flying is starting to move up a level im thinking about investing.

I have seen people use 4 cell Nicds or Nimh, and also the scorpion backup guard.

Im running a BEC in all 3 helis this will apply to, and they all run at 6V

    Ideas/options most appreciated

Scorpion backup guard would be my recommendation. Its small and relatively inexpensive.

and you just run that in parallel with your BEC, with a switch for when you want to fly?

4.8v, 4 cell nimh Jimmy off ebay. Works perfectly and unlike the Scorpion guard will charge itself when you're flying.

What ESCs are you using James? Be careful if Castle as I believe there's an issue with Castle BECs are products like the BUG.

I know the Jive will be fine, I have two going with buffer packs and some of the guys at the club have been using them for years (I just have the buffer pack plugged into a spare channel and at the moment I don't have switches on them I just plug them in when I fly).

Bec pro is also ok with a buffer but not sure about using it with the backup guard.

Castle built-in BECs apparently don't have a diode, so the BUG apparently can arm the ESC and (albeit weakly) actually power the motor. Castle simply recommend against using the BUG with their built-in BECs.

Ah ok,wont apply then as the CC 80HV is an opto (becless) ESC

Now that you mention that, I'm pretty sure this was the case with a Turnigy ESC with built-in BEC I was using on my 500 when I first got it. I had a CSM Becsafe on it with a buffer pack but it would sometimes try to turn the motor if the buffer pack was connected first.

                              Interesting!

I have a Talon 90 on my Goblin so putting a small Nimh or BUG into the Rx is not recommended by CC for that ESC?
