  • CSM SL 420 or GY401 on a 500?

Just wondering if anyone has used a CSM SL420 micro gyro on a 500 size heli?

I was going to put a good ol GY401 that I have spare, on the 500 I'm building, but now I have a CSM SL 420 available. I am just interested to know if it will be worth while trying the SL420?

A bit hesitant as I know it is a micro gyro ideally for 450 size or smaller and dont want to waste time trying it out if its not worth it.

    Cheers

Dont think you will go wrong with the 401 I had a CSM on my Raptor 50 and could not get the tail to hold banged a 401 on and now it solid

Have a SL420 on the Raptor 30.. Tail is solid. Have used the 420 micro on a 450 with no problems. If you follow the instructions on Csm website, It will hold no problem on any size heli. Never used the other so I cannot comment. But i have used CSM SL310,420,560 and 720. And they all work well once set up correctly and paired with a GOOD tail servo.
      From CSM Site:

A 401 will NEVER perform better than a CSM. Thing is with a CSM is it requires a precise mechanical set up or it will not be happy but a 401 is plug & play.....& it hides a bad set up.

another way of looking at what p4ddy said is that unless the model is absolutely perfect the CSM can be a bit picky :-)

401 works, 420 is about the same performance as the 401 with possibly slightly better piro consistancy.

depends if you prefer fiddling or flying.

the 720 is good. I spent way too long fiddling with older CSMs they were just a little too female......

401 is still an excellent gyro and 90% of people will never push the model hard enough to see the difference between it and the rest.

I have an SL420 on my Raptor 50, worked ok and have flown with it for a year but it is not what I would call rock steady. As already mentioned it's fiddly with regard to mechanical set up, and no matter what I did I always have to use a single "dab" of trim (in random directions) to dial in the tail at the start of each flight.

The other day was windy as hell and three mates all flew with 720's and held rock steady cross wind, my Raptor just drifted about. Now about to change it for a 720!

Must say the 720 is better than the 420, But on my 30v2, It held solid in a strong crosswind, and just flew fine - no vices held fine in loops flips etc.
What servo you running with it?

I used the 420 with an Align DS620. The gain was about 73% which was as high asI could get wihout inducing wag. It certainly was not awful but just never gave a completely locked in feel.
