  • 6s2p vs 12s1p on X50e

    Hi,

I thinking about getting a Thunder Tiger X50e but trying to decide on the best power setup. I am still a relative newbie I'm just about doing fast forward flight circuits, the odd stall turn and hoping to get the courage to do loops / rolls in the near future, so basically no real 3D yet.

As such, I'm looking for longer flight times rather than out and out power. I'm debating using a 1220kv motor with 70amp esc and using 2x3000mah packs in parallel so I end up with a 22.2v 6000mah setup or do I bite the bullet and go with a 510kv motor and a 120? esc and run a 12s1p with 2x3000mah setup so i end up with a 44.4v 3000mah setup.

What is the likely flight time difference and with the 6s2p setup will i just end up killing batteries?

    Thanks in advance

    Ian

Ok, I think you have things slightly confused.

If you want the same power from the setup, then you are going to have double the current and half the voltage with 6S compared with 12S. You will need a lower rated ESC in terms of current draw with a 12S setup, though it will need to be 12S capable.

Its more straightforward to run packs in series than it is in parallel, i.e. 12S rather than 6S2P, and safer too, as you wont cause a meltdown connecting a charged pack to a discharged pack in a 12S1P setup, where you would in a 6S2P.

      6s2p vs 12s1p on X50e

12s all the way, more power and lower currents. You may not want the power now but in a few months time it may come in handy.

I am also looking at an X50 electric helicopter. Would a pair of 5000mAh, 6S lipos be too big for this model? Most pilots use 3300mAh lipos. Not too concerned about the extra weight just neen to know if they will fit in the space available in the model.

Two 6s 5000 mah packs in an X50 will be far too heavy - 3000mah is about right. The key thing to remember about low voltage / high current vs high voltage/low current setups is that for the same given power output the low voltage system will be running at over twice the current. High current means more heat and more losses which has to be compensated for by pumping in more power.

So high voltage setups are both more powerful and more efficient which is great, however you need an ESC that can handle the higher voltage and a motor with the right kv rating so that it spins at an appropriate speed.

Thanks for the info. Time for a rethink on the next heli. I might now consider another E550S and convert it to FBL.

The X50 kit with the motor looks like a bargin at the moment! i imagine it would be seriously under powered though on 6S.
As said above, the E550s is a great heli on 6s which can be converted to flybarless at a later date.

                5000's too heavy??? Poppycock!!

Ive got 5000's in my goblin over the recommended 3500's and theyre 400g heavier than the recommended. I get 7+ minutes of 3d to a pack and leaves 20% in after the flight. And I wouldnt say my Goblin isnt agile enough
