  • raptor 30 tail setup

    Hello,

I'm looking for some advice on setting up the tail on my Raptor 30. I have got a DS650 and GP750 gyro. I'm unsure of what combination of servo horn and what hole in the horn to use. With the system powered I have put a horn on the servo so one of the arms is 90 degrees to the linkage, with the connecting rod fitted there looks to be a small amount of pitch on the tail blades, but i'm unsure how this ties in with how the gyro is setup.

    Any advice appreciated.

You should be aiming for around 4-5mm gap behind the tail pitch slider when the servo horn is at 90 degrees.

After that just follow the gyro instructions to get it set up.

I'm not familiar with the 750, but I'd start by using a servo horn hole around 10-12mm out unless someone else has more specific advice.

      Hiya,

Here's a link to some sites i used when setting up my rappy.

Raptor techniques and you can find the manual here in pdf format here

The servo arm i used was the small single sided one, second hole from the outer end.

      Hope that makes sense

        Hi,

Thanks for the replies. I've had a go at setting it up but I dont seem to be getting full direction on the left direction. Think I may need to adjust subtrim.

Don't touch sub-trim or any other trim on the tail, should not be needed.

Make sure that when you start with the stick centred and no trim.

Now make sure that the servo horn is straight up. If it isn't then rotate the horn around until you find a position where the arm is straight.

Now make sure that with the stick centred and the arm vertical that you have the 4-5mm gap I mentioned earlier so you start with some pitch on the tail when everything else is neutral.

If you still can't get full deflection in both directions you may need to move out a little further on the horn to get a larger throw.

Raptor 30 doesn't have a constant drive tail so it's worth getting a good neutral mechanical setup in rate mode on your gyro.

You'll always fly around in HH mode, but you'll want to set the tail to rate mode when you hit the throttle hold switch. Why? Because the tail will stop rotating and have absolutely no effect once you hit throttle hold (unlike a constant drive tail which continues to spin with the main blades), so as you auto down, the heli will just weather-c0ck into the wind. If the gyro is in HH mode at this time, the servo will go to full one side or the other and just create added air resistance. Resistance is the one thing you don't want when trying to auto a 30 size helicopter. You just need the tail blades to go back to their neutral position and stay there.

With this heli you can install the tail servo in the frame at the front or on the tail. it sounds like you have yours on the tail? If its on the tail boom, the mounting bracket is angled, so if you set the servo arm at 12 O'clock you get about 30% to the left 70% to the right. Thats how i have mine, it seems you only need a little more than zero pitch for the heli to go left, and the 70% side to go right.

If you are having probs getting it at 12 o'clock try using 2-3 servo horns till you get the one that lines up best.

              Good luck

Have a read of this here in the beginners forum -> http://www.rcheliaddict.co.uk/beginn...explained.html

It will hopefully explain out a lot of myths including the one about how much physical servo travel the gyro actually requires.

I thought I had got my tail sorted, good range in both directions till I just noticed that the servo is hitting full throw when the tx is only at 1/4 stick?

Could this be a setting in the tx?

It could easily do that if it is in HH mode. Do all your setting up and checking in rate mode.

That is not necessarily a problem, if the gyro is in heading hold mode then if you move the tx stick off centre the gyro will continue to move the tail as it tries to respond to the input so it can easily reach full deflection with just a small stick movement.

It does it in rate mode aswell, red light on the gyro. I was just thinking when flying its going to be really sensitive if its giving full right or left rudder on only 1/4 stick.

that's part of the fun . Off the top of my head I can't think what my End points are like using the same setup!
