  • First flights with my N5

Had my first very gentle test flights today and must say it feels smooth and quick.
I was running very rich as just fitted a new rear bearing to the 55 and wanted to make sure nothing was going to stop or fall off.
Nearly ran out of fuel on the second flight I was enjoying it and forgot to
check the tank, luckiley I had someone with me who noticed the tank was very low
Think I will fit a header tank for my own saftey
I'm use to flying with one and as I don't have a fuel magnet fitted I will feel
    happier flying inverted etc.
It will spoil the looks, but hey, rather that than a boken heli.
    couple of things did happened,,
Lost a canopey screw and second flight the auto rotation one way bearing locked,, humm,,
have to strip it down now to clean, oil, and check diam etc which I'm not looking forward to because of the bl**dy silly and fiddly top main shaft collarthats what I think of that,,
Anyway,, in all had good flights and will dial it up a bit more for my next flights

I also lost a bloomin' canopy screw, muffler side :/. Going to put a bit of threadlock in on each screw and screw it in and out a few times to stiffen the thread up a bit.

      Yep we live and learn
Jamiem's just told me to do exactly that in a PM

+1 on the thread lock idea. I lost (and found) a thrumbscrew on my first flight. I applied the threadlock and its been perfect ever since.

+1 on the header tank. I have fitted a quick uk tank using the quick mounting kit and i feel happier for it.

            Hi,

If your loosing thumb screws from the front canopy mounting position, then I recommend getting an M3 tap and extended the threaded section further into the mounting block on bother sides as I have noticed that the front canopy mount is only partially threaded and does not allow the thumb screws to screw all the way down.

I noticed this on my N9's and did this mod and I've never had a problem after doing the modification, also noticed the same on the N5 as it uses the same block from the N9.

It takes a couple of minutes to do and after it's done it will allow the thumb screws to completely thread into the mount and bottom out so they can be tightened.
            Thanks!

THX Rossco I have a tap / die set
I'll do both just to make sure,
              Have to make a new thumb screw though;
Jamiem also says put a little light oil on the belt to keep it supple
              Does anyone else do this?

No Worries! On one of my N9's which was my first one using the original thumb screws I used to use a drop of lactate of the thumb screws also but on my second N9 I used the new SE type thumb screws and also extended the threaded section of the mount and they have never been a problem and never needed loctite to stay in place.

On my N5 I've not used any oil on the belt at all, I do like to see how it runs without any modification and so far it is holding up extremely well! The tail belt drive system on the N5 is probably one of the best belt driven heli's I've flown! The belt doesn't tend to stretch or shrink like the Bando type belts and also the teeth a very chunky and heavy duty which means I've never had a belt slip once! I'd even say the Belt drive on the N5 performs better than some Torque Tube drive systems I've flown!!
                Thanks!

Funny you should say that about the N5 Tail drive verses TT
                  Jamiem say the same thing.
I'm just a novice flyer but having seen Jamie fly his N5 I know what it can do.
I'll never be to his standard but its nice to know the heli can way out fly me
                  Roll on summer!
