  • Finally got her in the air !!!

After work getting in the way alot over the last few weeks - finally got the N5 in the air today.

Have built a lot of heli's but for some reason have taken a lot more care with this one - and all seemed to check out fine, all be it for three short flights.

    Comments:

    1) Was really quite surprised by the std pirouette rate - much faster than anything I have ever flown, have turned down a bit till I get more used to it.

    2) The OS 55 and Funtech B320 pipe were slobbering rich at the start, will try and get this dialled in next time - does anybody have a feel for where the needles may end up (running 20% Optifuel).

    3) My AR7100R worked fine, apart from the fact that the sensor worked fine when I first installed it onto the motor, but now seems to have gone wrong - the red LED comes on when you rotate the engine but then doesn't seem to go out again. Tried playing with some washers but no good, may install a magnet and ATG sensor and run that in the AR7100R.

    4) Onw way is very very free, no hint of a lock-up - not like someone's I spotted yesterday, sorry!!

    5) Despite low headspeed from rich engine, the hang time from baby six foot auto's was amazing, can't wait to try some proper full height ones.

    Hi David,

That's excellent news!. Glad to hear you got the N5 in the air!!

I could'nt really advise wherew the needles are on mine as i tend to go on how it sounds, performs and temperature but if i were to guess from the adjusting ive done with the engine i would say it is around the 1 1/4 mark on the high end needle and maybe around the 1 turn to 1 1/4 mark on the midrange give or take. Initially i started winding them in together as this allow a more balanced mixture across the whole range and once it started to bed in i adjusted the needles individually.

I have a standard Spektrum sensor on my N5 and so far it has been working without fault but i do run a standard hall effect sensor and magnet on my Aurora with the AR7100R so i know it does work with that type of sensor. With the Spektrum sensor you need a small gap between the backplate and the sensor, i usually stuff i piece of heat shrink in there and then adjust the bracket either on the bracket or/and with shims washer to allow a small gap and then pull out the heat shrink, this should give a small gap between the backplate and sensor.

Good to hear everything is good with the autohub etc... and your enjoying the N5!!..,Trust me!!.. you will enjoy this machine more and more!!.. I'm that impressed with mine that i'm getting another.!

I had problems with the sensor.
I found out it was too close and was picking up the crankshaft and not just the pin like it should.
I backed it off to about 3mm from the back plate and it works great now!

If you light is on all the time then try backing it off.

          Nice one!

The thread as it appears on my home page shows "Finally got her in the..."

          I'm thinking;

          ...pudding club
          ...stationery cupboard
          ...rear

Perhaps it's just my sick mind.

            Nice one,

i'm nearly there myself - a few links, paddles, head setup and i'm done.

I have to say i've been a bit anal on this build and I think i'm upto 21 hours so far and feeling pretty tired.

Has anybody played with the various model types in a Solid G menu?

When I set mine up I used the T-rex 600N choice, but did notice that there is a pronounced bounce when stopping a rudder command. I know this can be adjusted in the setup, think you can reduce the rebound gain.

But was wondering if one of the other model choices might solve some of these things in one easy step - such as using Vibe 50, Synergy N9??

                Hi David,

I have only run my SolidG on my Synergy N9 previous and now my Aurora, which i have actually setup using the Modified Synergy Pre-set's.

With the N5 you may want to try something like a Raptor50 Pre-Set in the SolidG for the N5. With my N9 and Aurora i use between 10-15% Expo on the rudder, this is just personal preference as it makes the SolidG less sensitive around center.
                Thanks!

                  Rossco,

Will hopefully get more flights on her tomorrow (raining today), but as said originally setup using 600N default.

When I flew it the main gain was a little high, which I thinks is due to the large mechanical gain created by the length of the tail servo horn - but upon stopping a tail command there was a pronounced coast past the point, then a rebound.

I have had a look through the advanced settings for different helicopters and think I will change to one of the others.

Interesting I found these differences in the default parameters (all others the same), the stand out one is the L/R coast/rebound numbers.

                  600N Vibe Synergy
                  Left Stop 60 70 77
                  Right Stop 63 77 84
                  L Coast/Rebound 67 38 40
                  R Coast/Rebound 70 36 50
                  Pir Speed 51 70 70
                  Pir Balance 50 56 56
                  Rate Gain 25 38 38

I think I might try the Vibe settings instead of the 600N, and see how that goes.

                  David

                    Hi David,

Its worth a try, some of the standard SolidG pre-sets can be a little harsh depending what model you choose so its worth trying a few different presets to get one which is somewhere near and then do any slight adjustments to it if needed.
                    Thanks!

Yeah, when I tried the 600N settings the priouette rate was blindinly fast but the stops were really bad, because it would overshoot then rebound too far before finally stopping.

The Vibe settings seem tobe much happier, the pirouette was much more sensible, and the stops were pretty close to spot, maybe a bit of tweaking needed.

All in all much happier tail setup.
