  • Rave 90 env electric set up

Hello everyone, just wondered what motor and speedo, and head speeds you lot we're running and with what pinions. Really new to rave so would like some advice. Thanks.

I have an electric one and originally it was flybarred. I was using a Scorpion 4035 / 450 motor with a 14 tooth pinion, Castle Ice2 120HV. In it's flybarred configuration and fairly soft dampers it needed about 1950 ish for aero stuff, maybe 1600 in a hover. But I wasn't totally thrilled with the Castle governor with that motor and / or the available power. It was OK but did bog a little much for my liking. It may have been the timing settings could be upped I'm not sure. In any case it was reliable and consistent. I had Futaba 9255s on the swash and a 9254 on the tail, Spartan gyro.

Then I converted it to FBL toward the end of last year (Total-G) and changed out the servos for beefier AceRC DS1015s. I then decided it would benefit from a bit higher KV motor and smaller pinion and I got a Turnigy helidrive 480KV motor and bumped down to a 13 toot pinion. That setup had bags of power, no bogging even at low headspeeds but the castle gov could not lock into a consistent headspeed with that motor, I tried a different ESC and it had the same problem (headspeed all over the shop). But the Total-G works great and I love the way it flies now. I haven't had a chance to fly it enough due to the governor issues but I can tell it won't need as much headspeed. I was able to go to crazy low speeds in a hover and I think it will still be pretty nimble for 'big air' and smooth stuff at headspeeds well under 1900. At 2100 it's a rocket! Lots of fun but just more than I need for the flying I do.

My fav blades so far are the Radix FBL 710s and I also kinda like the Revolutions but it felt more 'locked in' with the FBL Radix. It would probably benefit from slightly longer blades, like 720s or something for a slightly more floaty feel because the distance from the blade grip bolts to the centre of the main shaft is quite narrow, only 70mm (compared with about 90mm on the Trex 700 head).

Anyway I really liked the Rave from day one, it's one of those helis that I instantly felt totally at home with.

I will change the motor out for something more around 510/520KV and start with the 13 tooth pinion and see how that goes. I have a rewound Align 700m that I started to test on Sunday and then had an ESC failure so where I'm at now is needing to fix a few things and replace the ESC.

-Here's a pic from last week with a new Fusuno canopy (and the now dead and buried Hobbywing ESC)

Have 2 x nitro ENV's but have a Ballistic which is exactly the same gearing etc as the ENV.

In the Ballistic i'm running a Kontronik Jive 80hv, Pyro 700-45 motor with Revco 14t pinion (from Fast Lad) HS around between 1700 and 1950 depending how I feel! It's a great set up like this.

Like Sheryl above I'm using Radix 710's on the Ballistic but like 690's on the nitros.

Edit.....OS105's are fantastic in ENV's.....I have two!!

What size packs are you running in the Ballistic George? I started buying 5000mah packs when I first got the Rave, almost without thinking about it but I am now starting to consider swapping them for something a bit smaller, maybe just keep one or two pairs of the big packs for long flights or when it's really windy. I have one pair of Gens Ace 4000mah packs and on Sunday I flew for 6 minutes and still had about 40% left (I will say, that was not all-out high headspeed). I'm going to try a pair of 3600s just to experiment with going as light as possible and see what the flight times are.

Tried all pack sizes in 700's Sheryl and IMO I think 4000's are the sweet spot of weight vs flight time and feel. 3600's will be lighter still and will work well if running slightly lower head speeds though.

Cant get anything bigger than 4000's in my Ballistic anyway as you may remember I bought the 635 that you put me onto and stretched it with the 700 tail etc!!

Hi Sheryl it's been a while since I had my rave and I seriously considered getting another recently as It made quite an impression.
              I was using a castle 120 hv with a scorpion 4035-560kv 12t pinion @ 1850 and 1950
I had no issues with the governor apart from the cc failing and writing off the airframe lol. I too preferred the radix fbl , I did try edge but went back to radix it just tracked better. I was using the align 5200 packs and was pretty heavy although you'd never notice it had bags of oooomph but loading the packs was my biggest issue with the rave.

Yeah in my experience the castle Ice can be a bit finicky about timing settings so maybe I just needed to set it higher or something. The only packs that I had trouble with are the Turnigy blue 30-40C 5000s but after moving the battery tray up as high as possible, relocating the straps, replacing a few bolts with round-head types etc. it's no trouble, I can load the packs from the back without taking the canopy off.
