  • G5 'Package'

I think I'm going to take the plunge and buy a G5 (once I've finished the H200). I can't think of a reason not to, or a better option.

So, I've been speaking to Blink, and looking at what I'll need as well as the kit.

This is what I've got on the current list:

Outrage 1700kv motor, Outrage 1300 25C lipo, HobbyWing 40A ESC

    Servos - Hitec HS-65MG (swash & tail)

    GY401

[TBH, I'd probably prefer a CC HV ESC, but I can't argue with Ade's view that the HW is much cheaper and does the job.]

More of a question is the servos. Should I use the same servos on swash & tail ? Are these Hitecs a good choice ?

[FWIW, I'm a beginner, and this will be a learning experience in terms of building and flying. So ultimate 3D isn't required.

Rx is likely to be an AR6200, but I'm not sure that makes a difference.]

    Any other thoughts ?

Personally id rather a beam. The beam flys very very well, parts are dead cheap, support will be second to none with rob blake and evolution rc at the helm and you also get a much bigger choice of battery packs.

for a beginner setup the only thing i'd change no matter which machine you go for is via tail servo. The better it is the easier it will be to take those first steps as it will hold the tail much better and is therefore one less thing to think about too much.

HS65 is a little slow as a tail servo, most people use the futaba 9257 on 450 sized helis. Can be sourced pretty cheap on ebay as it's quite an expensive servo from UK shops.

Not true, the G5 will fly 3S or 4S just the same as the Beam, it's just at 6S you can fly a lot lot longer. The Outrage pack is an absolute stonker of a pack, so there's not a lot of good reasons not to use it.

Get a good tail servo - everything else will be fine!
Perhaps take a look at the new Align tail servo DS520 which is on the Rave 3D I've got at the moment and working well. In fact, if you're looking at that servo, you should consider the gyro/servo combo. I'm finding it to be much the same as a 401 (supplied with the Rave from Midland Helicopters), but considerably cheaper!

          Cheers,
          Rob

3153 works pretty well and is only 30ukp. i have flown one with a 401 on a trex 450v2 and my gaui 200 has one with a spartan both work fine, but a 9257 would be ideal.

go for the HS65MG on the swash.

The 6S is part of what I like about it.

The starting point was when I saw yours at DMHC, I was impressed at a small-ish heli being that stable. A small heli that flies like a big one is what currently appeals.

When I looked at the manuals, the engineering rang my bells.

Low head speed; high voltage/low current; radial servos; programmable head mixing. All seemed conceptually 'right'. The first two give higher efficiency, hence longer flight times and tickle my ego as they're what I'd thought were a good idea based on my GAUIs.

Anyway, want one, so I'm working out a package.

Another contender is the Robbe FS servo which I have on my Beam at the moment with a GY401.

yeah, the Robbe servo works pretty good as well, just make sure you run it at the specified 5V.

                    Tail

I like the idea that a good spec tail is going to make flying/learning easier.

Some interesting economical gyro/servo options have been suggested. Thanks for those.

Given that I've been persuaded to go for a less exotic ESC, I don't mind spending out on a GY401 & 9257.

Just a thought... Will my Jazz 40-6-18 be ok on a G5 running 6s?
Think it would, but what do you guys think?

(I'm thinking of trading my Rex in for one of these sometime )

Well, I think you should start your own thread... 8P,',',',

Do you have the specs (or link to) for that ESC ?

Based on this, http://www.trextuning.com/jazz40-6-18.php , I'd guess yes, and that 40A is more than you need.

18 cells equates to 24V in the manual.

                            6S could be between 19 to 25V
