  • Fusion 50 - 6 cell conversion

I have a Fusion 50 which I've now decided to convert to a 6S setup (ease of single pack flights etc). I've just purchased a Scorpion 4025-1100KV motor for it which appears to be drop-in replacement. Now I need to order some cheap Turnigy 6S 5000mAH packs, an ESC and possibly a BEC.

I have a few questions for anyone running this/ similar setup.
Given that the rating on the Scorpion has Max Continuous Current = 100 Amps and Peak Current = 130 Amps (5 seconds)

I'm considering one of these 3 ESCs -

    Hobbyking YEP 120A HV (OPTO)
    Continuous 120A, burst 140A for 10 seconds

    Hobbyking YEP 100A (2~6S)
    Continuous 100A, burst 120A for 10 seconds

Hobbywing Platinum 100A ESC Speed controller
    Continuous 100A, burst 150A

Basically I'd rather use an internal BEC if I can but, if the opto is the best choice then, what size BEC is wise? I'm running 3 x JR DS8717 on cyclic and a BL 9180 Outrage TORQ on the tail + Mini V-Bar with 2 sats.

Which are the best budget 5000mAH packs regarding fitting them in?
Finally, I'm currently learning 3D so I need decent power (around 2300HS I think), will a 13T be enough?

    cheers Craig

I found that the Turnigy 30-40C packs were a tight fit, the problem being the way the power leads stick out. I ended up removing the battery tray and then they fit much easier. But I was unable to get anywhere near enough power and I don't know if it was the Castle Ice 100 I was using, the packs being only 30C or what. I had the same Scorpion motor which should be very capable.

Interesting - I had read the old Turnigy 25C packs had that problem but had hoped HK had somehow managed to make them smaller. Did you replace the battery tray with a CF plate or just rest it straight on the 'rails'?
A bit disconcerting to hear about the lack of power since 30C should be enough! I take it you mean it was bogging a lot as the headspeed should be good on a 13 or 14T pinion but possibly at the expense of torque.

Yeah I just let them rest on the frame rails which worked just fine. I don't know what was the cause of the lack of power actually, it could have been a setting in the ESC. I tried different timing settings and at higher timing it was better but the motor ran hotter. It's possible I just had a faulty motor as I got it 2nd hand and I had used the ESC on an Outrage 550 with a hacker motor and it was not a rocket but was better (and looking back I think the timing was too low and the Hacker probably should have made more power but I was still learning how all this electric stuff works). The highest amp peaks I saw were 110 amps so that should be well within the ability of the packs if they deliver anywhere near 30C.

On a loosely related subject, I converted a Hirobo SDX to electric (12s) with an Align 600MX motor and Hobbywing 70HV using Gens Ace 25C 2600mah packs in series and it has plenty of power, I was quite amazed actually.

My guess would be you'll have no problem with any of those three ESCs. The Hobbywings are great for the money and do seem to just work without any fuss. The YEP is supposed to be very good. I just got one myself but have not used it yet. I have used a Hobbywing 85 amp on a Trex500, the 70HV on the Hirobo I mentioned and briefly used a 120HV on my Rave ENV but changed it out for a Castle Ice2 and will soon be trying the YEP.

Here's a pic of mine (did a swap for something else a while back so I no longer have it).

Hobbyking are doing a YEP 150a esc with sbec now for a couple dollars more than the 100a if you want the saftey buffer, i've been told the YEP esc amp ratings are on their higher end so if your going to be close to max amps i would go for a higher amp esc

Thanks for that, I missed that version as I was filtering by UK Warehouse. Since Trillian has recorded 110A peaks this should keep me in the safety zone plus it has a BEC too! £39 posted with prog card !!!!
            cheers
