      Hi Andy

I have a Protos kit, still in the box waiting to be built I would be interested to see how your build goes.

I have to finish the build on my Logo 5003D, which I see you also have..

      Cheers

I had a kit from the first batch and there were a few niggling issues during construction but I believe these have now been sorted with the current kits so just build and enjoy

I had a parcel delivered from Andy at Real Raptors last week, FOC, which included all the upgrade parts now included as standard, can't beat the service!

I like it a lot, it runs basically the same power setup as the Trex 500 but weights 200-300g less. It does feel very light in the air and as a result it isn't a whole lot of fun on a windy day so it hasn't had as many outings as I'd like.

It climbs very rapidly and gets small pretty quickly so I bought a plain white canopy which is painted with fluorescent red and yellow to help my poor old eyes. I've got an Evolite 2500 6S pack and a Thunder Power Extreme V2 2600 62 pack, the TP pack is much better than the FP one, it hold voltage & headspeed much better and lands pretty cool, unlike the FP pack which gets nearer the hot end of the scale.

Despite all the naysayers I'm using the Align 60A esc from the Trex 500 and it performs well.

Just ordered mine today. Now searching for servos, ESC and possibly a different motor!

Servos might be HS85MG - no hard 3D for me, or is Mrs Santa is good and early Xmas pressie of 9650's for cyclic.

I have a GY401, so that wil go on. Not sure of an ESC and the motor I am considering is the Kontronics Kora 15-14.
                      Futaba 7C 2.4ghz Tx, R617FS Rx (x2)
                      Trex 500CF - 5S, GY401, HS-5245MG+9257
                      Belt-CP - Logictech 2100T, CC 35A ESC 3xSG90 cyclic/Futaba tail servos
HoneyBee FP - trimmed main/tail rotors (It won't die!)

I'm using the HS85MG servos and they work just fine, quicker is always better but the 85's do a good enough job at a sensible price.

I'm using a CSM720 with a 3500g and it works very well, especially since getting all the free upgrade bits A 401 should work well with a 9257.

Give the standard motor a go first, it runs a little hot but keeps on going and is actually pretty good. I'm using an Align 60A ESC with mine, not popular with some but working very well on my Protos.

                          For servos you should consider:
Hitec HS85 - Probably the cheapest decent option.
Hitec HS5085 - Digital version of the HS85 but more torque and slightly faster. Best value IMO
Hitec HS5245 - Good value chunky larger servo. Fits in but only just. Needlessly heavy IMO.
Futaba 9650 - Good performance but expensive and fragile gears.
InoLabs HG D251 - Good performance and quality. Reasonable value.
My choice would be either the HS5085 or the InoLabs.

                          For Motors:
Stock - works pretty well on 5 and 6s but gets hot. Good value especially if bought with the kit.
Hacker A30-10XL - Slightly more powerful than the stock. Runs a little cooler, but not much.
Kora 15-12 or 15-14 - The best performer but expensive.
Scorpion HK3026-1000 - Said to work well on 5s, but I haven't personally tried it. The numbers don't look particularly impressive to me.
The Hyperion H3025-08 or 10 looks like it might be a contender, but I don't know of anyone who's tried it.

                          For budget ESCs:
Castle Phoenix60 - Works pretty well with a good soft start and reasonable governor, but crap BEC means a seperate one is needed. Pc interface is useful for setting up. About £70.
Hacker X Pro 55 SB - I've been highly unimpressed with previous Hacker ESCs, but this one works quite well with a non gear stripping soft start and workable governor. Takes a long time to get up to speed at start up seems the biggest problem. The SB version has a decent switch mode BEC. About £70.

                            Thanks for the info Tean...

I finished my Protos last weekend, and now have five or six flights on it... its brilliant it flys very light ands has loads of power. It sounds really smooth and quiet I guess the belt primary drive helps that.

As far as electronics go, I have the Hitec 5245 servos is mine. They seem OK, but I am sure there are better. Originally I was going to fit a Flighttech 80A esc, but could not get it to fit under the battery tray. There isn't really anywhere else to fit the ESC, so I fitted the Jazz from my Trex500 instead.

My only reservation about the Protos is that I think it would suffer badly in a crash

Not sure now if my Trex500 has a place on the fleet anymore Except maybe as a scale project (yeah yeah I know, but I am on the wrong side of 40).

                            Cheers

You mean you haven't finished being thirty something yet?

I haven't tried any of the Flighttech "new range" of ESCs. I did try their Synergy type, but not much cop in a helicopter. 80A seems a bit OTT for this size of model.
