  • Careful when changing DX6i settings when live!!!

Almost destroyed the Twister storm at work today. The standard servos started to pack in one by one, so I ordered some Hextronix HXT900's. After fitting the front elevator servo appeared to move forwards at a strange angle, so I put the throttle hold switch on with the heli powered up to check the servo movements. When I increased throttle the swash was moving as if I were giving a forward cyclic command and when I moved forward cyclic the swash moved as if I had increased throttle. Now here's the dangerous part, I decided to reverse the elevator and the cyclic moved as should but in the wrong direction. I then reversed trottle and the heli just took off destroying blades, flybar, main shaft. Why did it take off when throttle hold was on?
Lesson learnt, never muck about with settings when live.

As you reversed the throttle, the 'new' idle position would have been the original 100%.

On a glow Heli, you would have moved the throttle to fully open when engaging throttle hold had you done the same thing.

Remember, throttle hold only goes to the position you set it too at bottom stick. If you reverse the throttle, it goes to the other extreme.

    Hence it took off.

Hope the damage was not too bad.

    Cheers

Unless of course you are just warming up for a 1st place Darwin Award, I think that is a lesson well learned.

I guess we have all had an unexpected spool up at some point, but that sounds like a doozy.

Tip: Try pulling the three motor wires next time, or unplug the ESC and plug a RX pack in instead.

Raptor 30 with OS 32 and AR6100E (flying again)
Twister 3D Storm, DX7 and AR6100. DS285's on the main rotor and S3153 on the tail with a JR G770T.
        Blade CX2, DX7 and AR6100E
        Walkera 4#3B seriously fun
        Walkera 4G3 seriously scary
        Phoenix Sim with Blade 400.

If you like it loud and dirty, only Nitro will really hit the spot!

Certainly did mate, myself and my flying buddy were lying beside it on the gameshall floor, looking at the swash movements and I was adjusting the Tx, you never saw two people move so quick, the blades spun up around our ears, the blades are in splinters.

I can sympathise there, my Twister Skylift went after my mum when I accidentally turned the tranny off.
