  • BLADE 230s esc fried or not?

Hi a little help please, recently reversed my 230s into the ground and wasn't quick enough with the kill switch to stop the tail spinning.
Damage done, just a tail tube, or so i thought. When tail motor removed there was splits in the wire from the tail motor but no breakages.
repaired these with shrink tube and replaced tail tube.
Ready to fly fitted battery, esc went through set up sequence with servos main motor and tail motor. On spooling up it stopped after approx 3 seconds and the 3 beeps again as though it was trying to reset. Spooled up again for three seconds and then smoke from the tail motor.

Back to the hanger, fit new tail motor and exactly same thing happened although i shut the power off straight away this time before hopefully any damage to the new tail motor.
I am guessing that i also fried the esc in the crash when the tail motor wires must have shorted out.

Has anybody else had a similar experience ?

    Regards Tom.

Im not sure on this heli but I know with castles esc's the beeps usually correspond with a fault/error code. Maybe check your manual to see if the beeps actually mean anything?

Thanks Dan there are two sets of beeps on these esc's, they occur when the main motor and tail motor initialise when you connect the battery.

Sounds like a bad ESC ...

I just had exactly this happen to me, Although mine wasn't a crash mine was connecting the tail motors wires incorrectly!
I'm assuming i've blown the ESC.
          Here's video.

Hi Paula, I hope you have sorted out the problem. I have found out now on two occasions that when crashing the 230s and the tail wires get stripped or broken it invariably and annoyingly blows the ESC. It is annoying because it is not a cheap item. If you damage the tail motor in any way throw it in the bin.#

              Hi Tom,

I have loads of blown ESC's from MCPx BL that did the same due to the tail motor driver fets destroying themselves when the motor or wires short. Unfortunately they usually burn a hole in the board and destroy the copper tracks rendering it unrepairable. Origional MCPx with the brushed motors did not seem to suffer as much and it was pretty crash resistant, plus when the motor FET's burned out they did not destroy the board.

I brought a new ESC and excitingly fitted it but then the tail motor just twitched a bit. It kept on running though, so the old ETC was definitely faulty.
I've ordered a new motor for the tail. I hope that fixes it!
I won't make that mistake again (I hope). Such an idiot!
                It's looking good though!

Very carefully check the varnish all along the three wires to the tail motor Paula as a short between them is bad news for the esc. If you find any of the varnish has come off you can revarnish the wires with nail varnish (colour choice is down to you!). I have also come across some badly soldered wires on both the plug that goes to the board and at the tail motor end, often these joints are only help together by the heatshrink. The cause is that rather than scraping the varnish off the ends of the wires at the factory to prepare the wires for soldering they just rely on the heat from the soldering process to burn off the varnish.

                    I will.
I extended the wires so i could fit the Huey Fuse. I THINK i'm all insulated. But i bet you can get caught in a loop of burning out ESC and Rotor if you get it wrong though. I'll triple check this time!
