I agree with John - I would say your money is best spent at this stage on a sim. Many on here use Phoenix sim, which has a huge range of simulated models available, realistic graphics and flight mechanics and will give you a great 'taste' of what it is to learn to fly a cp heli.

I recognise your urgency to head out and buy something 'right now' - I've been in that situation many, many times since I got into helis (in Feb this year). What you will find, though, through my experience, is that as you get going, you will realise that in fact the race is a marathon, not a sprint.

Just getting control over hovering the helicopter will take you months of practice. a 'blip' of brain activity, a missed beat of corrective control, and your shiny new heli will be whirring it's 3000 rpm plastic spinning knives of destruction (okay, I'm being dramatic here but they can do harm) towards windows, furniture, eyes, pets, tellys at high speed! Being careful and taking your time will help, but there are definitely times in the early stages (in fact at any stage) where the heli reacts faster than the brain.

From memory, it looks so easy on the youtube videos, sounds so simple to get to grips with from descriptions (I, as a professional juggler and semi pro magician, can balance a teaspoon on the bridge of my nose, keep a cascade of seven balls or five clubs going for over a hundred catches, riffle shuffle a deck of cards with one hand - and I figured it wouldn't take me too long at all to get the hang of the basics of hovering - 8 months on, and I am now feeling fully in control of upright hovers. . . But still see some room for improvement!) but it will take a while, and many crashes.

Don't let this put you off, rather I'm saying that you have months and months of enjoyable improvement ahead of you. In fact, looking at the way my flying has progressed and the timing of things, I would say that if you get yourself a sim and start practicing on it, you will be at such a great stage of the learning curve at exactly the right time to really enjoy next spring/summer. My start on the sim in Feb has led me to be at a real powerful addiction level with a beautiful 550 sized (outdoor only) heli to fly, at just the time of year when the weather is at its poorest, and the local clubs are coming to the end of their membership year!

Sim, sim, sim. . . just for a few weeks, then you'll know better what you want!

It's taken me years I started back in 2006 did every thing wrong bought wrong heli etc.
Then got the phoenix sim the flying got better still not that good just starting to have ago at inverted with some success.
Looking back I joined the wrong club although most the lads where ok their where no good pilots.
Flying with people the same ability don't work you need a club that will help a push you along.
It took me a long time to see this I moved clubs in summer this year its best move I have done .
My flying has made huge jump and this is down to the people in the club there brilliant.

Thanks mat and chris...well ive just arrived back from my Lhs because in all honesty i was going to get the nano,but the look in his eyes was priceless, the vender who ive bought all my co-axial gear from said much the same as you fellas ..huge learning curve and talked me out of it he said the number of people who come back in the shop and say theres something wrong with the heli (CP ones) when its been there skill level thats at fault,anyway ive got the msrx for a more gentle upgrading of my skills...i still feel excited because its my first single blade heli

Top idea. The mSRx is a top little heli - you'll definitely progress with it. If this is your first single-rotor, be ready to apply a bit of right cyclic on take-off to counter-act the natural left-drift of the heli due to the tail rotor.

That left drift seems to catch everyone out coming from co-axials! (it did with me!)

Thanks tom glad ive got a thumbs up on this, before i bind my dx6i im having a look on on the msr part of the furom for some noob settings ,i did buy the e-book many moons ago which contains the msr but its been revised for the x version ..dont want to buy it again

If you mean John Salt's books - they're good, but you won't need another. Just stick with stock settings for the dx6i - there's very little point in trying to "dumb down" a fixed pitch heli. By their nature, they're pretty tame as it is. More tame settings won't really benefit you in the long run anyway at this stage.

Stick to manual settings and take it easy. Don't try to run before you can walk and you should be OK. You might want to stock up on a few spare parts mind - in particular the skids. They're the same as on the new nano and they're pretty flimsy IMO.

keif, it will need more then that when ive thrown it out the f...n window ..ive quickly realised i dont have enough space to learn indoors on this heli, im not going to lie its took me hours to get it in the air and then it goes its own way,because my skill on it is nil i do require space,so please god let there be less wind tomorrow and im taking it to a local field..i realise i was like this when i bought my very first mcx2 and then it became a toy in a few months..but i realise why my hobbyshop man steered me away from the nano,oh i bent the tail fin when it hit my tv so ordered some nice coloured ones

Just keep at it and you will get there. Have you reduced rates and added expo to make it less sensitive to control inputs? The Msrx should be able to handle the abuse. It is a massive step up from coax even to a fixed pitch Msrx.
