  • TRex 550E Head Speed

I have been flying my 550E DFC for a couple of months now with a flat 85% throttle curve for gentle sport flying. Not really bothered about head speed as everything is stock. Anyway, I just got a head speed checker. Checked the head speed on some of my mates helis and it was within 10rpm of what they thought they were running... 1900 and 2100.

Checked my head speed and it came out to 2500! This was quite a shock. As I say, I am using the stock Align RCE-BL70G 70A ESC and stock motor and pinion from the kit. Surely it shouldn't be that high? It flies superbly and I have not had any issues but should I be looking to get that head speed down and if so how... I am already running a flat 80% throttle curve so I shouldn't go much lower should I?

Also, the obvious thing to do is to change the pinion but as this is the stock motor, ESC and pinion I wouldn't have thought I would need to change it should I?

Does the RCE-BL70G have a govenor mode? Should I be using that?

EDIT: IT ISN'T DFC!!! I am going mad! I was going to get DFC when I bought it but decided that the extra cost wasn't worth it for me as I am still very much learning. I must have just fogotten I got the normal FBL and not the DFC!!! SORRY!

if your happy with how it handles and you are getting good flight times with your packs then why bother changing anything ?

with my 550 FB i fly around 2000 RPM and get 6 mins from a 5000 mAh pack with 30% left....works for me.

just out of interest, how are you powering your FBL unit ? are you using the BEC from the 70A align ESC ?

if it flies good and things are coming down reasonably cool i wouldn't worry about changing anything..

Are your mates helis 550's also? Does your head speed sound 4/500 rpms higher?

The heli itself is capable of 2,500 HS - unusual your 85% throttle curve gives you that though.. what pinions and gears have you got/

I fly 2500 rpm for 3D anything less feels lethargic. 2200-2400 is ample for sport flying. This is my experience on stock 520mm blades.

To those that say why change if I am happy... I agree. I just thought that it sounded high and wondered if I ought to be thinking about reducing it.

TBH I don't know what gears/pinion I have... it is a stock 550E DFC... the latest version.

I am using the built in BEC of the stock ESC.

Everything is coming down very cool... even on 85% throttle curve. If things are staying cool then perhaps I will reduce it down to 80% but I am cautious about going lower. I'd like to get it down to 2200 for sport flying. I am flying again tomorrow so I'll give it a try then.

Experiment see what you like and don't like, it's a hobby so go play lol. The only thing I'd say is if you sacrifice a bit of headspeed you will gain some extra flight time. I forgot to ask are you using the governor?

@varelco I don't know if I am using the govenor. I didn't know the ESC had a govenor and that was one of my questions in the OP. If it does then I'd love to know how to switch it on and set the speed?

                            Clearly not.

The RCE-BL70G does have a governor but its not particular good, i had tail issues when i turned mine on. I thought the latest V3 550 DFC only shipped with a CC Talon 90 which is better than Aligns 70A ESC.

yes it's a 70amp one, and wouldn't bother using the gov, use curves as your doing.
