  • now i'm confused

just built a trex 700n LE with a flybarless head, now it flys realy nicely apart from the tail wag. I've set everything up on the gear to gear on my DX7 and set the tail to 48% well in hh it wagged at a medeum rate from side to side so today i went up bit by bit to 60% and the wag got smaller but increased in frequancy. Now i'm a newbee so don't start ****ing yourself but am i going the wrong way on the gain. have i gone from wag to hunting. or could it just be its new and the dampers need to settle in.
I think i need a local club with heli flyers.

Yep, need a bit more info .............But to hazzard a guess, i would say that your gain settings may need to be higher, many radios work with a range of 0-50% for rate mode and 50-100% for HH mode with 50% being zero gain. So for rate mode the smaller the figure the higher the gain and for HH the larger the figure the higher the gain.
so to have a gain for HH at the gyro of say around 75% you would need to dial in about 87% on the radio. and for the equivalent gain in rate mode you'd need to dial in around 12%.
If this is the case with your radio then your initial setting of 48% would give you next to no gain in rate mode and your 60% would only be about 20% in HH.
              Hope this makes sense

                still confused

i'm using the align 3g with the silicon mod. the senser is strapped down as well. the bit i'm struggling with is understanding the difference between a wag and hunting and what should be done once you define what its doing. am i right in thinking a wag is a slow left right oscalation which you'd increase the gain to eliminate and hunting is a fast oscilation that you'd decrease your gain for.
i'm using a dx7 set up via the gear-gear chanel where i'm guessing 0-100% is the amount of gain and 50% is mid point. do i set the gyro gain in rate mode to start with.

Shouldn't have to set the gyro in rate mode. Using the gear channel, a figure of 40% would be a good starting point. I'm sure for the short time I had my 3g on, I had to drop it lower to stop oscillations in fast forward flight.

If you are still running your engine rich, this might show up as a wag on the tail.

Also, check everything is silky smooth on the tail, no loctite in any of the links on the pitch slider. It only takes a slight bind to cause issues.
                  Cheers,
                  Simon

checked the tail and cant find any stickyness. The engine has been leaned out and is running nice if a little rich but the head speed seems about right. i'll drop the gains and give that ago. still don't know the difference between a wag and hunting though

                      aaar-ha

may have found the issue. I took all the tail rotor apart today and the small links to the blade holders seemed a bit tight. I took them appart and they seem smoother now plus i used a few drops of silicon oil on the shanks of the screws before loctiting back together. we'll have to see what happens when i fly it next.
