  • New Trex 700 Build

    Hello all,

I thought I'd share some pictures of my Trex 700 build. The maiden flight was today so I feel qualified to write this post now. The build was great fun, however because of feedback from forums I made the following changes:

    1. Microheli delrin mod 1 main gear and pinion
    2. Stainless steel screws (+ CNC washers)
    3. Quick UK canopy mounts
    4. Quick UK ball link upgrade
    5. Quick UK servo horns
    6. Align aluminium clutch block

The engine is an Align 91H wit the Align pipe. I'm also using the following electronics:

    1. R6008HS RX
    2. BLS252 Cyclic
    3. GY611 + BLS251 Tail
    4. Throttle Jockey Pro + S9154
    5. Arizona Regulator (Cyclic 7.0v, Gyro 5.0v) + Relion 5200mAh
    6. Switchglo

The first flight was good, the heli was really stable although because I'm running the new engine rich I didn't really feel it had the power I expected. Twin needles is new to me so on my next session I'll start to experiment a bit more.

I think the canopy was also rubbing on the main gear, this might be because of the Quick UK mounts so I'll try spacing them out a bit. There was also another rattling sound, if the heli was older I'd say it was like a bearing going. Right now I'm a little suspicious about the Align pipe. Thoughts are welcomed...

A quick note on the Throttle Jockey Pro. People on other forums have had problems with it on the new Futaba HS receivers. I found that using the two legacy channels (7 & 8) coupled with slowing the GOV channel down a little enabled me to enter governor setup even in HS mode. The governor also seemed to behave very well at the field, so I'm happy that I can use it. Forums can get you worrying a little too much...

Anyway, pictures attached. Hopefully I'll have more once I get it setup correctly, I'm really hoping for big things over my current Trex 600.

Good stuff, I just finished building mine yesterday and maidened it yesterday evening, 10 tanks through it so far and I like it, power is mental!

I am running stock kit with Align 91, MP6, BLS451 cyclics, 9254 throttle, 8900G and Spartan, Multigov Pro, 608RX, switch glow and ElyQ regulator with a 2P-2S battery, Radix 710's and coptamix 20% fuel.

Whilst I had read about some of the issues, I havent had any so far.

I am planning on the CNC washers and some canopy thumb screw stand offs... I might stretch to the QUK servo wheels and maybe a larger lipo as well.

I am watching the main bearings and clutch to see if I do need to upgrade them, look OK at the moment, but it is early days..

Looks like my battery might be a similar size to yours, I get about 4 flights before I decide to charge it, do you have any cog issues?

Was there a reason for going stainless steel on the bolts? I find them not as strong as the blackened HT ones, which never seem to go rusty on a nitro heli

Excellent build mate, Very nice superb tidy job.

BTW: You have got some nice hardware fitted in that, Enjoy flying it.

              that's strange???
i'm using the same main gear and mounts with no probs.
you might need to warm the canopy in hot water and open it up a bit?
might be a inconsistant align canopy??
              cheers

also mine has just started to make a noise around the clutch block?? think it's the clutch block bearing's?
it stoppped with a bit of oil,but after one flight it started again.
might have to remove block to check

ps enjoy, it's an awesome heli

Thanks for all the comments! I managed to get the wiring pretty tidy but it took many many hours to do it. These things are like a puzzle, you know there is a tidy solution but it just takes a long time to find it. I even had to make an extra mount for the Arizona regulator. They may be great regulators but the sure are difficult to mount in the heli.

The battery is a LiIon 5200mAh. I have no idea about number of flights yet, my guess would be about 6. If I'm honest I've not tested COG yet, I figured there isn't much I can do if it is out. I will test it though and report back.

I went for stainless steel because many people reported the original black ones can strip really easily. There are several threads on forums about this. I had the stripping problem on my Trex 500 and stainless steel bolts solved that. I figured I'd just do the same on the 700.

Yeah, the gear and canopy are very very close. I flew it without and I'm sure it stopped the main noise I was hearing (which was intermittent, as if the canopy was bouncing on and off the gear). I know Align canopy shapes can be inconsistent, I've never tried the hot water trick but might give that a go.

The second noise does sound like a bearing. I'm actually using the upgraded Align aluminium clutch block, but I don't think I could've really gone wrong with the installation. I'll just have to play around with a few things at the field.

Usually the bearing noise from a 700, from my experience, is the clutch bell bearings, but I would be surprised it is that on such a new machine? I have had my pair of 7's for a long time now and have stripped about 4 main gears (didn`t concern me at all as I have been practising hard and no incidents as a result) but had to replace a set of clutch bell and started shaft bearings once. I went to the -1 align main gear (the newer one) and have had to change them a couple of times now. Maybe the new non align gear is too tight and has caused your clutch bearings to go? who knows... good luck.

Great wiring job from the pics. Wish I had the patience and ability to get it that neat.

                      Nice build and great pics

As a matter of interest how much did the kit price work out to when you add all the upgrades to the price to sort the problems known with it out?

                        When I win the lottery I'll get a 700

The Futaba manual says to get the two antennas as straight as possible and at 90 degrees too if you can ("this is not a critical figure, but the most important thing is to keep the antennas away from each other as much as possibel") ... Will you get the best range/performance in that layout?

Interested to see how you get on with the MOD1 MicroHeli main gear, I kept mine on for a couple of weeks until I noticed the dusting up from the gear still hadn't stopped and the teeth were becoming a very strange shape It's now back to it's original main gear and doing fine.

Thanks, I'll give the clutch stack the once over before I fly again. Perhaps something is a little tight.

I would say about another £100, so the kit works out at < £600 with all the "upgrades". Clearly some may not be necessary, but even spending another £100 on this kit still makes it the best priced 90 on the market. Plus I get all the cheap spares.

That's a valid point Mike, although I believe the antenna only starts when the grey shielding stops so in my configuration the antennas are at 90 degrees to each other. I admit they could be further away, but I've been flying my Trex 600 with the same antenna configuration for almost 2 years now without problems. I will have a think about other ways of doing it though.

I can already see some white powder on the frames, although I had expected this from other people's feedback. I am expecting it to stop eventually though, I'll let you know how I get on. I do have the Align -1 gear ready but that would mean changing the pinion.

I bought a new clutch bell so I could swap over without having to remove the pinion, if you do this, don't forget the magnets!
