I'm finding Phoenix to be a bit of pain in the backside with regards to updates and wonder if there's a way around it.

I hardly ever use it to be fair, so when I do go on, there's usually a load of updates to do which is fair enough. However the update process is clumbsy. Why? Because I have a seperate Administrator and user login on the computer. I do this because it helps with security and also helps to keep my stuff seperate and away from my Son's meddlesom fingers, who has his own login.

It seems that these days, only the Administrator can upload and install the updates. If I run the updates when I'm logged in as my user profile, they just fail every time. Software updates load up fine as Administrator, but model downloads end up in the Administrator's model directory, not the user's.

So, all-in-all, it's a right royal pain, and on the odd occasion that I do decide to have a go, I end up spending several hours wasting my life sorting all this stuff out, and by the time it's half way done, I've lost interest in actually having a go.

Any ideas? How can I getall the updates to run and install robustly from my user account when Phoenix doesn't give me an option to 'Run As Administrator' from within the update facility?

I have a similar setup on my pc with an administrators account and other users account for basically the same reasons. And I have always installed updates on the administrators account but it's made available for all the other users. I have an account aside the administrators account that I also use and where I use Phoenix and this is updated when I perform updates on the administrators account. I can't really pin point where it's going wrong in your case, because all user accounts should be updated as soon as updates are perform by the administrator.

If I log on right now in my user account, Phoenix tells me I've got about 6 model updates outstanding and one software update, and it won't install any of them them.

I am now logged on as Administrator and I've got 90 updates to do, and they're taking hours and hours to download. They are currently running, so will see how it all pans out at the end.

Have done the software update as Admin already.

Having started the downloads at about 4.30 it's now 5.40 and I'm on 56/86 downloads. Still going.

I do hope after all this that the install doesn't fail!

I do hope so too, as they do have a tendency to fail sometimes during installations.

Pretty much most programs by the way they're coded need administrator permissions to run. You may be able to right click phoenix.exe or the Phoenix shortcut and run as administrator, but the update may run under a different executive file.

Exactly Laurence - that's the issue. When the updates have downloaded, the user doesn't get an option to 'Run As Administrator', so after all the downloading, it just fails.

But also, why have I got a discrepency in the installed updates between the user profiles?

Have now done all the 'Admin' updates and back to the 'User' ones. I bet they fail.

                As I suspected - failed.

Does anyone know where the downloaded files will be located so that I can run them manually as Admin?

Edit: found them - phx files. How do I manually install?

                  Plan B

Have now gone into the programs folder, found Phoenix application exe file, right click, select Properties and then selected 'Run As Administrator' under the Comaptibility tab.

Now downloading again and will report back.

I do hope it works this time. Been combing the Phoenix support page hoping to find some information, I'm afraid there's nothing on there to this effect.

                      Ok, I give up.

I've set the Phoenix program executable and the Update Installer executable to 'Run As Administrator' for all users, and it still doesn't work.

If I log in as Admin, there are now NO updates. I have them all.

If I login as User, there are 5 model updates and a flying field. I can download them but the install fails every time.

                      Utter pants!

Ahh, that's not good, gotcha. Have you sent the Phoenix team an email mate? They're very helpful, even if a little slow at rolling out some suggestions.

For the very rare occasions that I use Phoenix Laurence, I can't be bothered.

I have used their support service once before and like you say, they were very attentive.

If you feel like taking it forward, please pass on the details contained in this thread and maybe they'll include a solution in a future software update.

I bet it's got something to with with the Windows Virtual Store - often causes problems of this type with applications.

I've noticed that the update process is getting better and now prompts for admin permission. Not sure if you are aware but you can run the update program from outside the main program. If you've downloaded any updates it will apply them. With regards to the files in too places/users, like Laurence, I'd suggest tech support.
