I think the corornary care unit have just been alerted in Newquay........ Ive just sent Pete estimated costings over.
Some say my left nipple is the shape of a Raptor canopy.......... And that for fun I chase sheep in wellies 3 sizes too big. All I know is I am 3D Clod

Does a scale class require it to be a turbine? If it wasn't for the cost I'd quite like to own a turbine pod and boom but when you see the potential disasters if they do go TU (t1ts up) then the thought of all the work in a scale project - let alone the cost - then I'd have thought electric was way more practical and they have a similar whine anyway: sling enough battery weight in it and it'll handle just as heavy and just as long?
        Only asking.

No they certainly dont have to be turbine Peter. For instance the turboshaft engine for the 1/4 scale is $6500 USD Im Damn sure I could convert it to electric with a stack of batteries for that kinda money. Plus there is also the fire risk, necessity to carry an extinguisher etc for Turbine, Not to mention the hassle of getting Jet-A. They will run on Kerosene but they run much better on Jet A.

But for pure bragging rights tho, turbine wins hands down.

Maybe you should invent a turbine emulator for electric scale helis. Make a small unit that blows air through something for a more realistic sound and then a unit that burns a little kerosene for the smell.

exactly.. can brag happily with a turbine pod and boom without risking several hundred hours of scale build and paint turning into a pyre of crispy heli-bits

              fast forward to 5:30

                Ouch.

To be honest though, its going to hurt if it goes in with or without a fuse. A Wren turbine is circa £2k alone from what I understand.

Yup. But that's 'just' the money... with a scale fuse and full detail it's another couple of K and masses of time and care

Not at all... the vast majority are electric.

Interestingly I did the maths and for the same overall weight I would get no more run time (possibly slightly less in fact) from my current build using a turbine compared to the electric system in there now.

While they have a similar whine, there is nothing like the sound of a turbine... just awesome. The smell too is brilliant.

                    Sure isn't cheap though.

                      Re: Built to order

Kev. Just had a look at the Hirobo system. It does not look that big. Certainly smaller than the 1:6 I am considering.
I got away without a heart attack on the costs! Although the 1:4 scale is definitely off the cards!!

I think in the scale setting the whine of the brushless systems is more accurate to the real size turbines than a model turbine is. Yeah you wont have the smell or the actual turbine start up procedure, but the sound is better and will make for a neater install.

All this researching into them now, I want one! I just cant justify it to myself, because it'll be a hangar queen and it'll only get flown once in a blue moon. Id have to have the BIG Airwolf tho.

HEHE Yeah the Hirobo is effectively 700 size, The Vario is considerably bigger. Anyway hope all was satisfactory and look forward to hearing what you want to do.

If you do go turbine it's worth noting that some FBL systems can throw a fit... Something to do with some of the high pitch sound frequencies sending them crazy.

The heli command range have some acoustic dampening specifically for this, might be worth looking at, or the big daddy is the Gyrobot 900 jet heli controller... Apparently that one is rock solid for turbine use.

For some reason I have always liked the Jet Ranger and UH-1 and then the open framework type helis like the Allouette II and Bell 47-G.

There used to be a turbine airframe made in Australia using a two stage drive setup and, most importantly, it placed the engine up and behind the main rotor where it is usually placed on full scale helis. Their pod and boom was called the Zealous and they made a Jet Ranger as well but they seem to be gone now.

My all time favourite scale heli is Len Mounts Westland Scout.

Sadly its no more, he stuck it in and destroyed it........ I would literally bawl my eyes out like a teenage girl thats just been dumped for the first time
