  • Fun-Scale questions...

    Yo Peeps,
I seem to have got a couple of 'fun-scale' 500's - one is an EC135 and the other an Agusta 109 - both Align GRP shells I think, sort of cheap and nasty really, but pretty red and white bodyshells
Anyway both have got basic 500 FB helis inside them, and fly OK Ish, but I wonder if there are some words of wisdom out there that could help?
First to fly was the EC135, nice & stable but the tail was pitifully weak..is this just the gyro fighting the extra mass / drag of the GRP shell? I fitted some 550 or 600 tail blades and it improved it quite a bit.
The Agusta tail is also dreadfully weak.. I'm not trying 3D just a fast climbout, but the tail comp is pathetic.
On the EC135 I fitted wide-chord assymetric main blades so I could lower the headspeed, but of course, that weakened the tail RPM / authority.
So what do people do on these fun-scale thingys to make them fly reasonably nippy - not piro-flips, but just nice nimble and flyable?
    All wisdom gratefully received!
    Cheers

Hi trev, I never been into the scale side, but I thought they was meant to be flown like a full size. As in nice and slow gracefully. Low rpm and limited movement on controls and normally in rate mode I could be wrong.

you have picked on the two worst scale helis for tail control
the ec135 with a std tail is poor and with a feniston tail unless it is running fast enough they are poor
the agusta suffers with a weak tail due to the size of the body around the tail area, running a highish head speed helps the tail out

hello there , i tried some fun scale , but as you can see in the video , the heli was very sloppie , as i couldn`t get the headspeed high enough to get it all looked in , it all fell apart in the end enjoy the sloppieness dude

Cheers Brian, yep, not trying anything too strong, but hoping to get the tail to hold in a reasonable climb-out to get up in the air.
I'm not after 3D, just nice - a bit quicker than scale, just smooth fast banked turns and FFF etc. but not manic.

Sounds like a bigger front tailbelt pulley is needed or longer / wider tail blades. I think the issue is mostly due to the tail ratio on the 500.

I have always wanted something like that, 'fun scale' where I could still do the kind of aerobatics that the Redbull helicopter does.

                  Loving that Brian, thanks dude!
Apart from the scale-ness of it, it's a really nice flight with all the usual moves done slow and smooth so you can see exactly what's happening.
I must get some better thumbs from somewhere...
