  • what size is scale

    hello silly question about scale
    I know about the scales 130 450 600 etc.
but how big or small are 1/3rd 1/8th 1/9th scales etc. as I am at the moment im thinking on bidding on a 1970/80s 1/9th scale Morley Bell 47 G
and I was trying to work out what 1/9th scale was
    any help appreciated

Heli sizes of 130-450-600is a size that came about for electric helicopters and often can be an indicator of blade length. IC powered helicopters were sized on their engine size of .30 .50 .90 etc

Scale is completely different. Scale means that it is a model in proportion to it's real full size counterpart. A scale helicpter is a model resembling a real helicopter in the form of a body kit or fuselage over a pod & boom or built and engineered from scratch. Many pre bought fuselages are also known as funscale where the proportions aren't particularly representative but still look the part to the untrained eye.

Thus a 1/3rd scale helicopter will be 1/3 of th size of the real helicopter it is based on. So the Morley you are intereted in is 1/9th the size of a real Bell 47G.

Serious scale enthisiasts will scratch build complete airframes and propulsion systems and even theie fuselages. See the post with the fella scratch building his Wessex. Pod & boom heli kits most of us use are bolt together some parts from the manufacturer. Scale builders are engineers and true modellers.

Thats roughly a 30size nitro. As woodsta says its 1/9th real size. all its specs are in one of the pictures.Looks like it uses 550 main blades (1143 disc dia.)

As already mentioned its a bit difficult to say since a 1/6 Blackhawk would be a lot larger than a 1/6 md500 for example.

Personally I'd just go by the obvious - check disc size of real Heli, divide by scale factor (eg by 9 for your 1:9), and then find the size of Heli that is designed around that sort of blade size.

the morley bell 47g is a 40 class heli that runs 515/520 main blades
it is roughly the same size as a 30 class pod and boom or a trex 550e in modern money

the other one on ebay has had a few mods since it was built in 2006/7 from a box of bits with a new canopy, bubble and dummy fuel tanks from the LHC/Morley Shuttle,Raptor Bell 47 scale kit
it still has the century swift motor in it and it should have a 75A trex 600 esc
the clutch is still used in the heli
and it is using a hirobo shuttle rotor head that Jim Morley approved of when he saw it

it is one of 4 morley 47's that was awarded the morley scale cup
the last time the scale cup was awarded

here it is flying at the mk heli club fly-in
