Is there a farmer's forum where I can find out who owns a bit of land?
If the area you're looking at is quite rural then the best places to go find out about farmers and how friendly they might be are a village pub or a local agricultural engineer or at a pinch the local young farmers club. I'd start in the pub and ask the landlord if there's any farmers or farm labourers in - they all know each other and couple of pints should get you some leads.

The thread is about model flying over land and if you need permission to do so.As i run a model flying club i am very interested in making sure we are not breaking any laws.
we do have permission to fly in the fields that we are in but there other fields adjoining ours .Also are you allowed to over fly houses, public paths, roads so according to what you say anything above ground is air space.

The argument that says its about where you take off and not where you fly, is pretty obviously flawed, when you take in to consideration flying over school playing fields, houses, farm animals etc. Imagine how long it would be before the police came if you started pyroflipping over the local schools dinner break!!

Actually it's not flawed because the regulations also state to be in visible control and to assess and avoid dangers to buildings, property and people

Yeah there is obviuously a large element of common sense and dare I say it "Risk Assessment" involved. Still though I'd very much prefer to get permission. If I'm responsible and prove they're not just toys and I'm not messing about, word may spread and it may be easier in future to 'borrow' land to fly on. With all the attempts to stop FPV flying etc, the last thing I want is a farmer powered boycott towards the hobby in general pmsl.

You probably need to take read of the ANO and CAP.

Its pretty clear that flying over (someone elses) land is completely acceptable provided you are not flying dangerously. Piroflipping in a school playing field would be a retarded thing to do, and you would get what was coming to you.

Provided it is safe to do so (and if the land you are standing on is private land, and if public, there are no bylaws) then yes with a few exceptions, if the land is MOD, or if its controlled airspace.

Its a public footpath basicaly but very seldom used due to the fact it gets extremely muddy up there.
I used to fly in there as a youth with a model glider, well I used to chuck a model glider around in there
I have no idea who owns it nor how i could find that information out short of loitering there for days on end.
The field is literaly massive possibly 20 plus acres if not more & about a mile from my house.

What happens if you crash on the land? Is it trespassing to go and get the model?

Again, it would depend, as the laws on trespass and what consititutes a trespass are very complicated.

Trespass is a civil rather than criminal matter though, so its not really about it being 'against the law' in the way that most people think.

Officially it would be ..just as if you kick your ball into the neighbours garden. On the other hand few are going to be too bothered if someone nips over a fence to retrieve so long as follow country code and don't do any damage.. or crash every 2 minutes. Another reality is that if there's soemone in the field to see you then a) it might not have been safe to fly b) you now have someone to ask permission of.

Anyway trespass isn't a criminal act..it's a civil private suit at worst. The only criminal act is criminal damage while tresspassing. Who in reality is going to spend money sueing you? Even if they did and won then the worst would be a restraining order - even costs would likely be awarded against the farmer for wasting court time.

If you want to be legit then find the landowner.. as i said before local pub or knock on nearest house to your choice field..ask who owns it or where the next nearest farm is to ask there: someone will know.

Another point of 'fact' A muddy lane/track/walkthrough etc will be marked on maps if it's a right of way. it will also have a designation as footpath or bridleway etc. Under the assorted rules that govern those I think you'll find that heli flyig isn't mentioned <s>... BUT you will find info regarding motor vehicles including motorbikes and once things get engine related then they may well apply to ic craft.

I've got a couple fo rights of way across my land.. one is only right of access by owners/tenants of a filed th other side of one of mine .. the other is a public footpath: I'm obliged to keep it clear and useable but only in terms of single file and no horses etc. But no, I don't like thfact that folk can officially walk across my land because if the dogs are out and start jumping up at people etc (friendly but muddy feet) it causes trouble.. that and people don't seem to be able to walk in silence.. it don't want a bunch of chattering hikers plodding across my day 'cos I'm a miserable sod.

Well the fields I had my eye on are a no go according to the country park. Guess I'll have to buy a few local farmers a brew or three.

Re: Permission to use a field

I have been drive by flying for years now and in that time met 6/7 farmers. I have always asked there permission and got it, sometimes with restrictions on livestock or crops.

If it's a regular spot I use I will note rush hour times of commuters in and out of village and select those times to walk around a bit with a bin bag cleaning up the area. Word of my good deed soon get passed around. I even taught a couple of the locals to hover in one of my spots last year.
